Still, being the heir to a fallen kingdom is pretty similar.

Well, the point is that insects used to be much more powerful, and 200 years ago Wriggle would have been a real terror. But now she's not considered a threat by anyone, including herself

I guess. At the least, Wriggle doesn't seem to care. She actually seems perfectly content with her place in the world.

Gets caught in traps and doesn't afraid of Reisens.*

Also, just a thought, the way the trap worked wasn't just a rope snare. The bait was honey painted on bamboo. Wriggle was licking honey off of bamboo when she got caught. That is a mental image.

Maybe Wriggle got so used to the simple life she lives now, she doesn't worry about her status as Queen.

Or she is secretly building up her insect forces for the day that man grows weak, ready to be devoured by her hordes.

I have no idea where I got that idea.

A thing about the fall of the House of Bugs shows that any of the kings of the heap can fall. Bugs used to be comparable to the oni. Maybe one day the oni will also fall to the level of bugs if the fear they represent fades. See also the tengu, I guess.

I wonder if the world's perspective counts or whether the oni and tengu are just reliant on Gensokyo's fears.

[up] I want to see a picture of Wriggle with a crown that is not a princess wriggle picture.

Another thing: She's not the queen of insects. She's a firefly youkai with the power to control other insects. There's no indication that the insects were ever organized

Empress of Insects? President of Pillbugs? Matriarch of Moths? Lord of the Flies?

Well, anyway, the Queendom of Insects is clearly more feudal than centralized.

Lord of the Flies

Wriggle is the humanoid avatar of Beelzebub?

Seriously though, since she has the power to control insects, it isn't hard to assume that she has power over them as a leader, or at least a leader-esque figure. Of course, she probably doesn't worry about any kingly duties.

I don't think there are any other kingly duties. There are no taxes to collect or trade agreements to work out. There's only armies to raise and people to command. The title of Bug Queen comes only with boons and no responsibilities. Its basically awesome.

Or something.

Edit: Well, she does speak for the bugs. But that's limited to "hell no I won't tell them to stop biting you."

Wriggle's royal duties clearly involve using her powers for personal gain. What are the other bugs going to do? Rebel? She can just use her power to make them cut it out.

Why must you guys always do your voting periods while I'm at school!?

On topic: Wriggle's cool. I like bugs and generally I'm the one who tells my friends to stop killing bugs. She has green hair and can control bugs. I'll think of more things as time comes.

[up][up][up] So Wriggle has special Bug Queen pheromone hax? So what happens if she starts to feel bad would another bug attempts to Supersede her position.

Of note: I'll probably cosplay as Wriggle for Halloween coincidentally. Would that count as a trap, reverse trap, or a double trap? Just asking.

I wonder if Wriggle supports some of the more odd things of the insect kingdom.

Wriggle ~ Lightbug

A firefly. I'm sure some of you have seen such a specimen on one dusky night in the outdoors. Flickering, floating lazily through the air, an easy target for the aspiring, young entomologist with a jar or a net. They're hardly a threat to humanity, serving as the mystic glows in the night rather than a group of pests. How ironic that the most powerful insect in Gensokyo is of the Lampyridae stock.

Then again, it's a testament to the humans of Gensokyo that the most powerful insect is 'only' Wriggle. How much worse it would be if Wriggle was a mosquito, or a poisonous centipede, or (heavens forbid) a harvest mite? Human disgust towards bugs kills most of the dangerous ones off before they can mature into youkai. Wriggle only managed it because nobody saw her as a threat until she became a threat.

How many times she was captured and put in a jar by a few errant humans? Treated as just a pretty light, while the other insects were summarily slaughtered? Her whole life, she's only seen humans destroy insects or dismiss them. Her continued existence is based on her weakness. If she ever became sufficiently strong, the village would be after her with torches and pitchforks and (horrors of horrors) bugspray. No wonder she's so adamant about insect rights.

I wonder how much of her life she can actually remember. After all, she has been shown with significant memory problems. It might be that she's becoming senile. Insects are built for very short lifetimes. That's why their memory is so basic; they usually don't need it. Maybe she's lived too long and she's just running out of the mental memory needed to store new memories. Poor girl.

Now, a question. How does the bloomers come in? Pants are a rarity in Gensokyo. Only four characters wear them: the brash, boyish captain; the immortal, raging phoenix; the stoic gate guardian; and the little firefly. The captain wears shorts because it's proper sea-wear, the phoenix's pants is covered in protective fire seals, and the guardian wears pants to avoid flashing everybody in sight. There is reason for them. Wriggle is...different.

Perhaps it's a rejection of how humans treat her. The way humans treat bugs is analogous to the way that crude men treat women. If they're not pretty, then screw them. Wriggle's choice of slightly more masculine bloomers shows that she has self-worth that's independent of how humans treat her. She's not some wallflower that you can push around. She's her own woman.

We ran out of things to say.

'kay.

And on that note, Wriggle picdump time. Banner ads NSFW, natch:

Hmm. Wriggle herself is a reverse trap, so her apparent gender is male, so you'd be a male cosplaying as someone who looks male but isn't. So if someone unfamiliar to Touhou saw you, they'd probably think you were a girly-looking man - not a trap - while to a Touhou fan, who'd be expecting someone in a Wriggle costume to be female, you'd probably be a trap. So you'd be Schrodinger's Genderbender, whose trap status is dependent on the knowledge and expectations of the observer.

Throw in the fact that you're a guy cosplaying as a girl dressed as a guy and add Recursive Crossdressing to the mix. You are gonna confuse some people, son.

It's because insects pollinate flowers herp derp. Even though fireflies do no such thing, especially not to sunflowers.
