No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

To be fair, terrible judgment is endemic to the 40k setting, starting with the incredibly bad decision to be in it.

If the spoilers are true then the next psychic awakening book is another dud. The Thousand Sons have no fleet assets or anti-orbital defences for their headquarters and after Kaldor Draigo appears they home in on his psychic might to just bomb Tizca from orbit. Magnus can only save himself while Thousand Sons die in droves. No word on what the Dark Angels get up to yet.

And to be fair is not like ultramarines just beat senseless the DG, they have trouble taken them down, so the traitor legion still have fuel to run out.

[up]That...dosent make sense, and if true then GW leanr nothing about what make the chararter hated.

Hmmm. GW have a job opening for a Specialist Games background writer. I am so tempted to have a go and send in an application as it is pretty much my dream job for GW but it's an hour and a half drive to Nottingham from where I live, which is a bit of a long commute. I am going have to have another operation at some point, which will also complicate things.

One interesting thing about the job description is the list of products that the applicant will work for: Adeptus Titanicus, Necromunda, Warhammer: The Old World, Horus Heresy and other games and supplements.

They announced the Old World some time back as the fantasy version of a Horus Heresy analogue.

Holy hell that's a lot of good stuff. Loving all the new Admech weirdos. And hell yes, finally a proper Ghaz model!

Quick question: Should the current, relatively old, artwork currently on the Zoat section of the Tyranid page be replaced with a pic of the new model?

We don't know. Possibly they'll stick to the pre-End Times timeline, or maybe it'll be an alternate path where shit didn't go tits up.

While one yes isn't a great majority for changing the Zoat pic, nobody has been against it, so if nobody objects I will change it at some point this evening, or in the morning.

A new question: the following:

  • Obfuscating Insanity: One line heavily implies that he is much more acutely aware of his state and that of the Necrons than he pretends to be:
"Even if we all ceased to be flesh and blood millions of years ago, which of course I don’t believe for a moment,’ – Zahndrekh actually winked – ‘wouldn’t it have suited us better to live in denial of that, as some fools might say I had done? Wouldn’t it be better, Obyron, just to accept our fate, and enjoy immortality for the everlasting life of merry campaigning it has proved to be?"

Other than not stating where the quote comes from (its the novella Severed by Nate Crowely, which is told from Obyron's POV) it also misses out the following lines:

Obyron: "You old bastard. You knew all along."

Zahndrekh: "I knew nothing of the sort, old friend. But since you seem to be labouring under some delusion that you're a soulless machine, I thought I should at least make some attempt to set you straight"

Now I know this is playing with the trope in some way but I am not entirely sure how. Any ideas?

I would say Subverted Trope since it at first makes you think he knows his actual plight, but his next line immediately shows that he really is delusional.

Unless you think he really is aware and is just saying that to screw with Obyron. In which case you could also argue it is a Zig-Zagging Trope.

Then it would be zigzagging. Basically if it feels like a Mind Screw it is a Zig-Zagging Trope.

He is literally winking when he says those lines. But the author did say later that his depiction was based on parkinsons and that it varies on a day to day basis whether or not he's playing the role to cope or if he genuinely believes it.

EDIT: Also the soulless machine bit was about some of Obyron's internal conflict.

[up]I think that would count as Subverted then as he isn't doing it intentionally. How about this for a rewrite?

  • Obfuscating Insanity: Some of Zahndrekh's dialog at the conclusion of the novella Severed indicate that he could be more aware of the reality than he seems to be, only for him to contradict himself almost immediately afterwards. The author, Nate Crowely, has stated that this depiction was based on relative with Parkinson's and that his awareness of his condition varies.

Couple of grammar errors: "the reality" is kinda vague; "based on a relative with Parkinson's [...]".

[up]Yeah I thought the first didn't sound right, it should have been "the reality of his condition". As for the second, I really need a new keyboard as the buttons on the left side have issues.

In other news. Reveals from the Nuremberg Toy Fair

Aeronautica Imperialis: Imperial & T'au aircraft.

Necromunda: Goliath supplement with some new models

Adeptus Titanicus: New Starter Warbringer Nemesis Titan & new book.
