No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

How well do Tau stack up against DG on the tabletop anyway?
Disgusted, but not surprisedI'm not particularly familiar at all with the game (to say the least) but I do recall reading that Tau are relatively good in general on the tabletop. But do take that with a saltmine.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Depends on the level of play really. Tau have one really optimized list that performs great in tabletops whereas Death Guard are nowhere to be seen. But the average DG army is better than the average Tau army.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.So that squares up pretty well with a superior force of Death Guard grinding unstoppably into to the Tau only to be halted by an exceptional commander inches from victory, doesn't it?
If Shadowsun can turn it around.
She has a new model upcoming. I think we know the answer.
Aside from that, the Tau have the narrative issue that they can't afford catastrophic defeats like everyone else due to their small numbers. If DG made it through the Nexus and invaded the heart of the Tau Empire, that's it for the Tau as a faction. So, it can hardly happen unless GW wants to squat Tau (and as much as many would be pleased by that, it'd be beyond stupid).
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.The Tau will be saved by their warp entity
New theme music also a boxThe Necrons haven't stepped into this storyline yet, right? Seems like a good time for Trazyn to meddle and get a new model.
I remember they attempted to help shut the Eye of Terror towards the tail end of the 13th Black Crusade, but that's about it.
Then again I'm going via the story of Battlefleet Gothic 2.

Or we could get Bemesor Zahndrekh pop in, believing he's protecting his own people in a sub-section of his own territory
They're the only major faction that hasn't gotten anything slated for the current Psychic Awakening campaign, no. And mind you, this is the campaign that had the time to include stuff for eight of the nine main Marine variants.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.And the reintroduction of Necron pariahs would be huge right now.
The third party of this one will probably be Genestealers since Shadowsun's model is getting shown off fighting them IIRC. Necrons will likely be saved for fighting the Mechanicus and maybe IG (if they aren't in Saga of the Beast).
They'll probably have to announce more entries in the campaign, since between The Greater Good and Saga of the Beast we still have Imperial Guard, Orks, Space Wolves, Necrons, Genestealer Cults, Harlequins and the assorted Imperial factions (Admech, Sisters, Knights, Custodes) unaccounted for. I believe all of those were promised to get new stuff in PA.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.The sad thing is, when you list it out like that it sounds inevitable that the Necrons and Harlequins are going to get used as imperial punching bags (unless they bring in Chaos for another set of new rules, there's still a few legions without updates after all). I can only hope GW defies my predictions and doesn't go full spite fic (e.g. a scene of a lone Custodes wiping out dozens of Harlequins) and don't go with the lazy option of Mechanicus and knights vs Necrons.

Now, let's be fair. In Phoenix Rising the Eldar managed to job horribly to a Slaanesh daemon that wasn't even featured in the campaign. So they don't have to job to their opponents in the book, there's plenty of opportunities.
And y'know what, after a couple Harlequins slaughtered their way through the Custodes in the Beast Arises series, I wouldn't be surprised if some butthurt author decided to give like for like in the future. Though to be fair Custodes will slaughter Harlequins other than Troupe Masters and Solitaires pretty easily on the tabletop.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.They've already gotten several one-sided stomps since becoming playable.
If does boil down to Mechanicus vs Necrons, the Necrons had better knock a hole into Mars.
Re Tau vs. Death Guard: the Tau fight the Death Guard barely to a standstill in 5 fronts, but only just, and in one of those fronts the Tau's resident Doomguy KAIS was leading the charge, not Shadowsun.
The 8th Ed rulebook really stresses that any of those fronts can collapse at any time, leaving the core of the empire open to the Traitor Legion.

In one part I get the death guard is so good at this: pre heresy they were pretty good at killing xeno and they are one of the most xenophobic legion in general, also being pretty much a big wall of mucus and FUCK YOU really drive the point home.
But really, they have that many resource to push the tau?
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"They were gathering their whole legion a bit to the south before this, that's where they get the manpower.
Plus Chaos fuckery gives them plenty of resources even after they'd just gotten their asses kicked attempting to invade Ultramar, twice.
the forces of chaos never give up,ever
New theme music also a boxIf they had good and unclouded judgement they wouldn't be with Chaos.
Die bovine shitlords.
