Didn't we know most of those already? Though it never ceases to amaze me that Sasuke, a character who defined a good portion of the series, was something Kishimoto added for his editor.

I knew abut Sasuke and Naruto being turned into a human, but the rest are new to me.

[up][x6] And then it turned out that it was actually Black Zetsu who orchestrated it all. Those are just more twists on top of the original twist.

Perhaps I didn't word it well. He wasn't behind *everything*, but he was the secret leader of Akatsuki, responsible for the Kyubi attacking Konoha, and a lot more crap, all of which had absolutely nothing to do with Kakashi or his backstory. So why have a character from it play that role? What's even the point of that?

[up][up] That IS there job after all.

But forcing the Chunin Exams feels like it was bad for the series, the original premise of doing missions and being introduced to characters gradually sounds better.

It's a shame really.

I can only imagine how things would have been if they'd taken their time.

I can think of one pink haired Kunoichi who would have benefited from that slower burn, I'll say this much.

I dont know, while hindsight is 20 20 and the gradual introduction sounds leaps and bounds better (Not to mention most critics agree that it was the Chunnin exams where the series began to lose the early charm) I think that editor may have had a point and we wouldnt have been so patient. It IS the most popular arc for a reason.

Don't think the exam was the issue.

It wasnt, but it did mean the end of the early promise of travelling around the world on missions.

Its one of those big mysteries of life.

Sure we can't make an accurate claim as to what could have happened but its interesting to think about.

[up][up] Not sure how it explain it, but I think the Exam would have helped towards that if things slowed down afterwards.

Things went too fast into the chunin exams. Even as it aired, i felt it was too early to go for a promotion after like 1 successful mission. Land of Waves is still a popular arc, i don't see why they couldn't have added a second arc before moving to the chunin exam. Similarly, the aftermath of the exam went over pretty quick. All in all, there wasn't all that much time to develop the characters to the point they needed for Part 2.

Hindsight may be 20/20, but i find it hard to believe that the series would suffer that hard from a bit more time before the exams.

The continued focus on missions before the tournament would have gone a long way of better establishing Team 7 and then make Sasuke's dissolution all the more tragic.

As it stands, they go on one mission together as a team and that's it. After the exams, Sasuke begins his gradual descent and Kakashi and Sakura stop mattering to the plot for the most part.

I get the Chuunin exams was when the series really took off for people, but I don't think waiting more for it would have hurt. Like at least another 2 arcs of missions at least.

Agreed. I mean, we can assume they went on a lot of other missions off screen, but that still wasn't enough.

They didn’t.

The Chunin Exams started literally right after the Zabuza mission & when the exams ended Sasuke was hospitalized as Naruto journeyed with Jiraiya to find Tsunade meaning there was no time for other missions.

I'm going to do a liveblog of the first chapter of the manga around this month. I'm giving a heads-up because I can be a bit talky.

Yeah, as much as One Piece is long, they actually took time to build up the bonds between the characters in each leading up to the big arc. That way you feel that their bond together is strong and genuine. As said before, there should have been a gradual build up to the Chunin Exams instead of just going right towards it.

And I'll say it again I think Inner Sakura should have been an ability that she had, that not many people have. I mean seriously. In On Piece, Inner Sakura would have been shown to be a secret ability that only rarely pops up. And again Inner Sakura could have been useful for counters against and for genjutsu.

See, what i dislike about One Piece is that it takes forever to get going. You're dozens of chapters in before the basic crew is even assembled.

By chapter 3, Naruto has shown the basic crew (naruto, sasuke, sakura, Kakashi). By chapter 3, Luffy hasn't even picked up Zoro.

By chapter 30, Luffy is pickup up Usopp. By chapter 30, Zabuza is beaten and we shortly enter the Chunin Exams.

By chapter 70, Luffy is facing Arlong and basically making sure his crew actually stays. Naruto is smack dab in the Chunin exam at the 1-on-1 battles.

The contrast is weird because Naruto is busy proving himself for promotion while Luffy is still busy with his crew assembly. So what exactly was the rush with Kishimoto, when Oda was meandering around?

Was One Piece really popular right off the bat? That might have had something to do with it.

@devak

I believe the opposite in hindsight. I think it gives time to get to know the characters better rather than rush through arcs and have it done.
