Itachi was clearly messed up (not surprising for a child soldier) and was drinking the Kool-aid of the village propaganda.
Uh the Itachi novel in anime form confirmed most of the Uchihas were so psychotic Sasuke and Itachis dad kept his Mangekyo Sharingan a secret because then they'd kidnap Naruto, have him turn Kyuubi to destroy the village, and rampage to make the entire world kneel to glorious Uchiha master race.
Not to mention a lot of them were Madara sympathizers, and Madara wanted to kill the Uchihas as much as he wanted to destroy the rest of the village in the end.
The Uchihas Drank their own psychotic brand of Koolaid with LSD and blood of slain friends for power.

We already knew before this Mangekyo Sharingan was a power they got by happily murdering their loved ones. The anime even included a female Uchiha made Izanami to save the sole Uchiha left after a paychotic mad craze for Mangekyo lead several dozen Uchihas to their death as they killed each other for "UNLIMITED POWER".
My favorite was when it showed Indra was a Psychopathic Manchild mad dad didn't give him everything after he brainwashed people to do what he willed, then murdered his only friends who suporrted him for power, and created the Ninja warring states period solely to spite daddy.

Pretty sure the inbreeding happend eventually once Indra likely mindraped a bunch of women into having sex with him, because this is a man who had no concept of consent and brainwashing/mindrape and murder were the solutions to all his problems.

So looking at earlier episodes, was Kabuto's backstory majorly retconned or am I missing something?
Because the hints from the Chuunin exam stuff don't really mesh with what actually turned out to be up with him, at least as far as I can tell.
