YMMV / Pokemon Crystal Kaizo

  • Game-Breaker: For most of the game, a proper usage of Explosion can be this. It has been nerfed to have 1 PP, but Explosion and Selfdestruct have an effective base power of 500, which allows you to KO a lot of threats in the game. Some parts of the game are designed around a durable Pokémon that could exhaust your team, letting the rest of the team to clean up, most of which are solved by a clever use of Explosion. Throw in some buyable Ethers into the mix, and you effectively have a once per fight win button.
    • Wobbuffet, shockingly enough. Because opponents almost exclusively have attacking moves, and because these moves are optimized for the Pokémon’s stats, and because the AI will always pick the move that deals the most damage (as opposed to randomly picking moves), not only is it easier to predict when to use Counter and Mirror Move, but it’s essentially guaranteed to take out any Pokémon since opponents do so much more damage in Kaizo than in vanilla. Since you’re one shotting anything if you hit it, you’ll bypass the opponent spamming healing items, which is one of the main drivers of the hack’s difficulty. If playing with items, you can sweep entire teams by taking out a Pokémon, switching, healing Wobbuffet enough to take another hit, and then bringing it back in to take down another Pokémon. Because of Wobbuffet’s insane hp, this strategy can work even if the opponent has a solid 20 levels on your Wobbuffet, which is obviously a boon in the endgame.
  • That One Boss: Special mention need to be made for Aerodactyl. It's a Rock type, which means it resists Explosion. In the late game where it has more than 100 levels to work with, it's impossible to outspeed, has pretty high base attack, has the massively powerful STAB moves Ancientpower and Sky Attack, and nice coverage moves. Several late game challenges have them, and all but force you to make sure you can handle it, or you lose the fight.
