  • Informed Wrongness: Jess busts out his usual Brutal Honesty when Luke tries to rope him into a plan to break up Liz and TJ, giving him a What the Hell, Hero? for inserting himself into other people's lives to "fix" them, whether they've asked him to or not. He points out that this allows Luke to feel like a martyr when the person fails to be "fixed," and the person gets to feel like they've not only failed, but disappointed him. This sends Luke into a tailspin, with Lorelai reassuring him that Jess is just angry, he doesn't mean what he says, and that he's wrong. But is he? The A-plot of this episode involves Luke trying to "fix" his sister's life, even though she didn't ask for his assistance, and the B-plot involves Lorelai's broken window. The window remains broken for days because Luke is too busy to fix it, and Lorelai is reluctant to call a repairman because it would hurt Luke's feelings and he would guilt her about paying money to fix something he could fix for free. She asks him to fix it not because she'd like him to, but because he has inserted himself as her go-to handyman to the point she tapes over the broken window with plastic and Barbie band-aids to avoid disappointing him. And when she finds him in a tailspin, it's after he's literally broken into her house to fix the window. His interpretation of Jess's speech is that he is a burden to those around him, giving legitimacy to Jess's assessment that Luke likes to play the martyr, since Jess's main point is that Luke just needs to take a step back and let people live their lives.
