• The Woobie: Shin Dong-Hyuk was born in a prison camp that is so horrible that it makes life in North Korea as a regular citizen look great by comparison. He spent his first twenty years being starved, tortured, and abused by the guards. When he tried to escape, his one and only friend was electrocuted to death by the electric fence. Shin had to climb over his friend's dead body in order to avoid the electrified wires.
