- Bittersweet Ending: The ending can be interpreted in this way. Martin Bannister suffocates to death, but does so while fantasising for the final time about being Doctor Who, a hero travelling through time and space with his granddaughter Susan, finding comfort in his dying moments as he chooses the fantasy world in which he is happy over the real world in which he is miserable.
