• Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Some reviewers find that the extremely dark subject matter makes the story a difficult read, especially since the first eleven chapters feature the Zodiac being tortured and little else. Plus, after a brief Hope Spot in which several members of the Zodiac break out of their prisons, Bill completely breaks Wendy's spirit and turns Dipper into the Shapeshifter. Even the apparent bittersweet ending doesn't offer much relief, given that the world is still a Weirdness-plagued hellhole, the Zodiac have been irrevocably transformed into immortal godlike monsters and will have to spend the rest of eternity making the world slightly more livable for the human race, and Nyarlathotep is waiting in the wings with the intent of waging interdimensional war. In the face of these developments, some readers find it too depressing to bear.
