There's no indication in either the teaser or any publicity about the film that Astrid's dad will be a character. This could mean that Lydia is divorced, widowed, or has always been a single mom and Astrid is searching for a father figure in her life. When Beetlejuice shows up, he will start to fill that void in Astrid's life but Lydia will want nothing to do with him and a rift will occur between mother and daughter as a result. The Bureaucracy of the Land of the Dead no longer exists.
Since the Maitlands aren't hinted at in any reports for the casting, it suggests that they may have moved on from the land of the living. However, in the first film, it's stated that they had to haunt their house for 125 years, which suggests that the bureaucracy that was seen in the first film no longer exists and that the Maitlands were allowed to finally leave the land of the living in a much shorter timeframe than they were previously told.
