• Technology Marches On: For all the talk of scrap and preservation in the book, it’s ironic that the series' traditional villain, the diesel locomotive, is here represented by BoCo, a Class 28/Metro-Vick Type 2. Class 28s were notoriously problematic, with numerous mechanical faults. Indeed, by the end of the year following the book's publication, all 20 of them were withdrawn, with only one preserved.
