• Ascended Fanon: There wasn't much fanfiction for the strip, but what little there was usually got some nod in the comic.
• Technology Marches On: Since the comic debuted just as the dot-com boom was taking off, some of the jokes concerning computers can be nearly archeological to modern readers. In one comic, Kevin can be seen flipping through a box of floppy discs, there's an entire storyarc about Brad winning a "top-of-the-line" computer in a radio contest (and it having a flatscreen monitor being seen as a big deal), mentions of Usenet chat groups being the closest thing to any sort of social media, and while most of the characters have cell phones, they're the bulky late-90's ones with antenna.
  • The climax of the "Occupied" arc (a crossover with Funny Farm) has a power failure cause serious problems for the Accounting Department of Mayers where Lisa is working as an intern, because their computers got knocked out... along with their electric calculators! Just a few years later, the advances in portable tech would make this whole plot point laughable.
