Trivia / Spock's World

  • Technology Marches On: An increase in core memory is requested for the ship's BBS.
    • At one point, Kirk sends a screenshot to Uhura and asks her to find the source of the quote using the ship's library.
  • Diane Duane was a huge fan of the ''Kraith'' fan fiction series, written primarily by Jacqueline Lichtenberg with input from many, many others, including Duane herself. A very similar secessionist movement is the basis of the first main plotline in Kraith — again led by someone with close ties to Spock and strong personal reasons for pulling Vulcan out of the Federation.
  • Gene Roddenberry was also a fan of Kraith and encouraged writers for the films and series to read it. Its influence can also be seen in the TNG two-parter "Gambit", where a Vulcan privateer explains she and her cohorts are looking for an ancient Vulcan psionic device. Tallera tells Picard of a "small but growing movement of extreme isolationists on Vulcan. A group that believes contact with alien races has polluted our culture and is destroying Vulcan purity. This group advocates the total isolation of Vulcan from the rest of the galaxy and the eradication of all alien influences from our planet... There was even a time when we used our telepathic abilities as a weapon. A time when we learned to kill with a thought." She is referring to the Stone of Gol, saying "it is a psionic resonator, a device which focuses and amplifies telepathic energy." This is straight out of Kraith and the psionic devices used by the pre-logic "Top of World" Vulcan government.
