  • Ernest Wright physically tied down the E key on his typewriter with string, to prevent himself from accidentally typing an E.
  • Even so, there were four times he wrote words containing the letter E. In the 1939 edition these were: "the" on pages 51, 103 and 124, and "officers" on page 213.
  • Many times, Wright had to completely abandon a sentence and start over, because he couldn't figure out a synonym that lacked an E. Sometimes whole paragraphs had to be ditched.
