There are quite a few tragic moments to be had in this story.
In General
- The sorry state of Southern California at the beginning of the story. The entire area has been flat out abandoned by the United States due to the massive Xen presence, and the evacuations that did take place utterly failed to save everyone.
Cygnus Fleet
- Whenever a member of the fleet dies, it hits everyone hard, because unlike the other factions, every member of fleet has a backstory, so their deaths are much more personal compared to other losses.
Flashpoint
- While Mitchell may be obsessed with revenge, it's clear that he does care for his men on some level, and is saddened by their loss.
- Nick is desperately trying to hold Flashpoint together and act as The Conscience to Mitchell, but it's clear that he can only do so much. And despite his best efforts, Mitchell just gets worse by the minute.
