The Awakening

The Hunted

  • Damali's reaction to seeing Carlos apparently die in Hell. The memory was so painful that she shut down her third eye, leaving her blind.

  • Carlos visiting the graveyard in L.A. where his old squad is buried.

  • Shabazz sharing his story with Damali in Bahia, while hurting and insecure over seeing Marlene with her old flame. Also doubles as a heartwarming moment. He accidentally shot and killed his partner when he felt a succubus brush up against him and tried to shoot it. He was convicted and spent ten years in jail.

  • Marlene and Kamal's star-cross romance in backstory. They fell in love while Marlene was staying with Kamal in Bahia many years ago, but were forced to separate for Marlene's own safety after Kamal was bitten by a weredemon and became a were-human. Kamal and Marlene's pain and sadness while Kamal is telling their story really highlights how tragic it is.

The Bitten

  • In The Bitten, Damali's grief over Carlos' torture and death and her miscarriage.

The Forbidden

  • Raven's plight as a ghost trapped in Hell. When she comes to Damali she's obviously sorry for what she did as a vampire, and seems pretty tormented as a succubus.
  • Also, Raven appearing to Marlene during the battle in Philly, to guide the team to safety.

The Forsaken

  • Seeing how much Damali and Carlos' relationship has broken down in the months after The Forbidden.

  • Damali and Carlos' big fight on the beach. It's heartbreaking to see just how much their relationship has deteriorated. Not to mention both their reactions when Damali furiously compares Carlos to Cain and claims that Cain is better than Carlos in many ways—Carlos' pride shattering, and Damali painfully realising that she's gone too far with her words.

The Wicked

  • Gabrielle's turning and death in The Wicked, and Marjorie's grief over it.
  • Kamal's sacrifice and that of his entire team during the battle in The Wicked, and Marlene's reaction to it.
  • Hubert's death. Seeing such a kind guy die so brutally really pulls on the heartstrings. And Sara's reaction only added to the emotion.

The Cursed

The Darkness

Shadow Walker

  • The truth about Stefan—he was born a werewolf due to his mother being bitten while pregnant, and because of this he was ostracised by his guardian community. He was eventually brought to the Neteru Academy which became his home, but after rumours break out about a werewolf on the loose in the Academy preying on students, he is immediately suspected and becomes a pariah again.

  • Sarah Rivera spent her entire childhood terrified of what she saw in the shadows, unaware that it was because she was a Shadow Walker and nothing to be afraid of. When she finds out the truth about herself and her abilities, she breaks down in tears with Nana Marlene comforting her.

  • What makes the above worse is that Sarah's father Carlos knew the truth but kept it from her out of fear of losing her, and even went as far as convincing Counselor Zehiradangra to put Sarah in Blends instead of Shadows, in an attempt to protect Sarah from her own destiny. Sarah understandably feels extremely betrayed and hurt when she finds out what he's done and screams at him in rage and pain.

  • Carlos' reason for trying to keep Sarah from fulfilling her destiny as a Shadow Walker—he knew from the moment she was born that she was the child he and Damali had lost in The Bitten, and couldn't bear the possibility of losing her again to the darkness. It really shows that even decades later Carlos is still haunted by his torture in Hell and the loss of his and Damali's unborn baby.

  • Ayana at first appears to be a care-free, cool big sister, however once Sarah is at the Academy she finds out that Ayana is stuck in an abusive relationship and mixed up in some shady business. Sarah is sad for her sister but also a bit disappointed in her.

  • Ayana's kidnapping. Inez, Mike and Delores and grief-stricken and the entire Neteru compound is ready to find Ayana and bring her and the other missing people home. Sarah feels very guilty about Ayana's disappearance as she had tried contacting Ayana for help in the hours before her disappearance was made known and assumed that Ayana was not responding because she was with Brett. This belief caused Sarah to feel angry at Ayana.

  • The reveal that Wil Archer's mother is part of the Morrigan and the ringleader behind the kidnapping of the students and staff in the Neteru Academy, with Wil's close friend Patty helping her. Wil is shocked and upset at the revelation, especially after finding out that his mother intended for him to become part of the Morrigan as well. The book ends with him and his father attending his mother and Patty's trial.

  • In addition to the above, Wil is also feeling pretty down because Sarah has started dating her compound brother Valencio, after she led will on to believe that she had feelings for him. Unintentional or not, Sarah's actions hurt Will and their friendship is not the same afterward.
