The Carnival's main show is revealed to be a battle against another strange ally of Jack the Pumpkin King. It summons a spirit that torments the party, mainly Brand, with painful psychic visions, and calls upon the undead to restrain them. The battle is nearly disastrous, but the party survives; however, all enthusiasm Brand once had has been ruined by this traumatizing experience. To reward the party for a good show, Jack offers another deal: tell him where the were-raven is, and he'll teach them how to traverse the mists of Ravenloft. The party is too untrusting of Jack to betray someone they barely know, but a confrontation the frustrated Brand has with the Night Reaper on the town's outskirts lets slip where they plan to go next: the town of Vallaki. Once the party arrives, they notice it's surprisingly more lively and friendly than anywhere else they've been in Ravenloft, but trouble may have followed them there...
