Recap / The Bridge Ch 37 You're Gonna Die Running

Go To

Ki Seong pauses from her recollection of her history with the Gumiho to silently signal Applejack to open her bag. Inside she finds a silk suit whose vest component matches Ki Seong's coloration. Seong reveals it was one of her only remaining treasures from home to survive the trip with her and was going to be Cho Yon's wedding attire. As per tradition the bride made it for the groom and used her body coloration for it.

Back with the flashback, the weird circumstances continue to mount up. Cho Yon would swear he saw or met Seong where she had no memory of being and Yon randomly finding his window open at night and things in his room moved despite having latched the window shut. One night Seong woke up in a half-awake, almost dream like state to see a creature wreathed in shadow crouching on the other side of her room. It slowly approached her bed she saw it had pointed ears, light colored fur, and paws sporting long fingers and claws; with blue reflective eyes. When she finally stirred to complete awareness, it was gone but she glimpsed a pair of blue eye shine looking at her from across town and outside her window. Understandably she didn't go back to sleep.

Seong researches the creature at the library first thing in the morning and finds a record from eighteen years ago by an old Kirin. He claimed that decades ago his family living on a farm adopted a sister who ended up on their doorstep one day. The sister was pleasant and dutiful, but occasionally seemed extremely naive about certain things and small animals would sometimes go missing on the farm regardless of her being on watch those nights. When the brothers returned from town one day to get the formal adoption finalized, they found their sister had decorated the house and prepared a great feast. They dug in, then their sister asked them why families stay together. He told her it is because they love each other and love comes from the heart. She interprets it as love being collected and stored in the heart. The brother dropped his fork, and was shocked when the iron utensil phased through a candle. The illusion was dropped, and he was horrified to find his parents and brothers dead and the house in ruins. His adoptive sister returned to her true form of a nine tailed fox and attacked him. He was barely able to fend her off using a frying pan and a grease fire.

He was found by a monk who gave him three jars: white, blue, and red. When the fox attacked him again, he broke open the white jar and she was trapped by thorns and vines, seemingly sealed away. He eventually moved on and started a family. When he was old, he visited the spot where she was sealed and found she was gone. He hysterically ran into town trying to warn everyone, but they all dismissed his story, saying Gumiho are only a myth, and they inspected the remaining jars and found the blue one only had ordinary water and the red one had oil and a wick. He died of heart failure later that day.

"You're gonna die running."

Seong finds a picture of him with his family and finds he was Cho Yun's grandfather. Realizing he has no idea about the creature, she rushes out to warn him. She finds him, but is too hysterical and crying to get the words out. He tells her to calm down and offers her soup, saying he loves her and they will be married soon. In hindsight, she should have remembered that he doesn't know how to cook. Her iron hairpin falls into the bowl and breaks the illusion. Cho Yun is dead, and standing before her is the Gumiho. She chases her and pins her down, but before she can kill her, several dogs show up and drive her away with their barking. She retreats, but warns Seong, "You're gonna die running."

Ki Seong quickly decided to leave the village, especially since the creature framed her for killing Cho Yun's family by taking her form. She took a ride on a small merchant vessel to Equestria. In her room, she reads up on the Gumiho's abilities and weaknesses. The first mate invites her for lunch. She politely declines and goes back to reading, but looks out the window and sees the ship is drifting toward a storm. She then finds the first mate is actually the Gumiho in disguise. Seong fights her off and runs onto the deck to find the crew dead and the place clawed up. The lifeboat is missing, so hopefully some of them survived. She grabs a pole with a iron hook to defend herself as the ship enters the storm. The fox easily dodges her swings as Seong asks what she wants. She wants what Cho Yun's family passed down to him and then to her. She pins Seong down and paralyzes her with her magic kiss, but before she can rip out her heart, the falling pole knocks over a lantern and sets her on fire. She screams and draws back as the rainwater spreads the burning oil, setting more of the deck on fire. Seong recovers and jumps overboard as the ship is struck by lighting and split apart.

Ki Seong finishes her story by saying she and her suitcase washed up on shore and was cared for by Gentle Leaf's parents. She started a new life after assuming the creature either burned or drowned. But she was paranoid and set up wards just in case. Her adversary, or Jeog, only goes after her targets, so as long as she couldn't reach her, everyone else was safe. She wants love, but with her twisted logic, she thinks she can obtain it by eating her targets' hearts. The love Cho Yon passed to her, and what she passed to Gentle Leaf and Anguirus. Seong and Anguirus get embarrassed, but an annoyed Applejack tells them to just confess already, they all know they like each other.

I have your niece.

As Seong continues working on the puzzle box, Anguirus and Applejack take turns keeping watch. Seong explains the cabin is surrounded by wards to keep Jeog out, but she's searching for weaknesses. They look out the window and are shocked to find Jeog holding up Gentle Leaf and threatening to kill her. Seong screams and tries to rush out, but Applejack grabs her and says it's just an illusion. Seong won't listen to reason, but Applejack has faith in Winona and Jeog couldn't have gotten past her. Seong sadly says even if it is, she'll offer herself to Jeog so that he and Gentle Leaf can escape. Anguirus holds her and says they care about her, and she's not sacrificing herself. Applejack reminds her that in Equestria, they are a team and they help each other out. Seong looks around and has a plan.

The trio throw a few smoke bombs to cover their movements. Anguirus steps out, wearing fake antlers and Cho Yon's wedding garment. Jeog is shocked, thinking she's seeing Cho Yon himself. He blows iron dust, clinging to Jeog's fur and turning off all her illusions, including the one of Gentle Leaf. She doesn't notice, and follows him. Seong removes one of the wards, allowing her to approach the cabin. Suddenly, he grabs and throws her toward the cabin, then Applejack lassos her and swings her into the cabin. Seong replaces the ward, and now Jeog is trapped. As she angrily pounds on the walls, the trio consider their options. If they try setting the cabin on fire, it won't burn fast enough, and will destroy the wards. Applejack suggests they find Rodan and have him blast the cabin with his Uranium Ray. As they turn to go, Anguirus regrets that he can't access his power over flames. Otherwise, he would be able to end this murderer right now.

Inside the cabin, Jeog angrily declares she will have what she came for and blasts the barrier the wards make with her foxfire. She eventually overpowers the wards and blows them up. The trio rushes back to find the cabin in flames. Jeog emerges, burned and with two of her tails destroyed. Jeog is through with toying with Seong, it's time to die. She fills the area with fog, then goes around Anguirus and lunges, but Applejack kicks her back. In the fog, the trio can barely even see each other. Jeog throws Applejack into a tree and knocks her out and blasts Anguirus with foxfire. Since they aren't actual flames, they are able to hurt him and knock him into a river. Seong fires blasts in every direction, but Jeog knocks her down and paralyzes her with her kiss. She's about to kill her, but sees Anguirus pull himself out of the river and decides to deal with him first. She approaches and he struggles to fight off the pain and defend himself. Seong can't move and can't use her magic. She struggles to save him and remembers Jeog telling her, "You're gonna die running." She remembers her loved ones Jeog has killed and now threatens Anguirus and Gentle Leaf. She decides no more running and breaks free of the paralysis. She stabs Jeog with a fire poker. They battle and Seong stabs her a few more times. Applejack recovers, then grabs an iron chain and lassos Jeog. Together, she and Seong drag Jeog towards the burning cabin. Just as she's about to escape, Anguirus tackles her, then bites her shoulder and drags her into the flames. As the Guardian Beast of Fire, he is unaffected while Jeog burns in agony and begs for mercy. Applejack and Seong look on, then Seong sobs that it's finally over.

About time.

An hour later, he emerges from the flames holding Jeog's skull, which Seong stomps to dust. They are all battered, dirty, and bruised, and Cho Yon's outfit was destroyed by the flames. Anguirus and Seong stare at each other, then Applejack playfully shoves her into him. He kisses her hoof, then she kisses him on the lips. Applejack laughs, retrieves her hat, and says it's time to go home.

In Our Town, Starlight Glimmer finishes placing Double Diamond's Cutie Mark inside her vault. She is thankful Maud Pie showed her a special kind of rock that can hold magic. She notices her magic seems to be getting stronger. Each time she uses her Cutie Unmarking spell, it is easier to remove the Cutie Mark and she's recently been able to remove them from multiple ponies at once. She thinks about Sunburst and Moonbeam, but stops herself and declares she doesn't need them. She'll wait until all are equal, then they will all be together. She looks at the makeup concealing her true Cutie Mark behind an equals sign. The vault is almost full.

It becomes incredibly dark, and freezing cold wind blows through the cave. The "Staff of Sameness" is shattered. A horrific cackling echoes before passing. Once it passes, Starlight goes outside to find Our Town is completely empty. At first, she assumes she has been abandoned again, then she is shocked to look up and see an impossibly huge, golden three headed dragon, Grand King Ghidorah. As Our Town is isolated, she has not heard of the Kaiju. Ghidorah has just finished teleporting the citizens of Our Town away. He decided to target the town because he sensed something unusual. He cracks the mountain open with his telekinesis and lifts out the vault. He can sense powerful energy coming from it, and notes Bagan would probably want it. Starlight blasts him, but all it does is make him notice her. Deeming her an insect, he inspects the vault and decides to keep it for himself, then teleports it away.

Furious, Starlight blasts him with her Cutie Unmarking spell at full power. When used against a being that lacks such a mark, it instead shaves off some of their potential. He is shocked when his power is momentarily drained, but then the spell explodes and Starlight is knocked senseless as his power returns. Curious, he reads her mind and discovers her anger, frustration, ambition, and loneliness. He deems her pathetic, but decides she may be of use to him as he revises his plans. He removes her memory of their encounter, then plants a command deep into her subconscious and teleports her away.

Hours later, she wakes up on a road. She attempts to return to Our Town, but Ghidorah's command makes her seek out Godzilla. She walks until she reaches a town, then finds a newspaper showing that Moonbeam Glimmer has ceased all hostilities toward Godzilla Junior. Frustrated and angry, Starlight thinks of her older sister.
