Recap / The Bridge Ch 32 Absolution

Go To

An Earth Pony mare with reddish pink fur and a black with some gray mane walks into Ponyville. She wears a white headband and a red scarf and her Cutie Mark is a magnifying glass over an egg. She runs into a Pegasus stallion who is reading a newspaper and keeps rubbing his jaw in pain. She offers to examine him, which he appreciates. She looks into his mouth and confuses him by muttering about the structure of his jaw, teeth, and tongue. She discovers that he has a seed digging into his gumline. He thanks her and goes to see the dentist Minuette Colgate. As he leaves, she asks if she can have his newspaper and he says he was done with it anyway.

The front image of the newspaper is a split screen. One half shows Godzilla Junior's battle against the Gyaos flock and the another shows Junior in his Unicorn form being interviewed by Canterlot's nobility. The article is titled, "Friend or Threat? Canterlot votes Former!" She reads through it and finds another image of Moonbeam Glimmer verbally assaulting Junior and stressing him out. Concerned, she starts wandering through Ponyville and passes by Sugarcube Corner, where Mr. and Mrs. Cake are taking a break. Their foals Pumpkin and Pound Cake try to play with Pinkie Pie's pet baby alligator Gummy, but he's completely unresponsive to them, making them cry. The traveler walks up and shows them that reptiles have sensitive stomachs by rubbing Gummy's belly, making him purr in contentment. The babies cheer up and start mimicking her action. The Cakes thank her, and she asks how to get to Canterlot. They say the north train will arrive in five minutes and leads straight to there. She checks her headband and pulls out two bits, but the train fare is four bits. The Cakes say to just put it on their tab as thanks for helping their babies. She bids them farewell and heads for the train.

In Canterlot's hospital, Xenilla lies in a hospital bed bored. He's in a lot of pain as his Healing Factor gradually forces his broken bones to reset, but he's determined to tough it out. He's been telling Princess Luna about his great secret and regretting that he had attacked his father for nothing. She says Junior never told her he was his brother, and he says Junior hates him and never would admit they are related. He asks how Mothra Lea is doing, and Luna says she is recovering and in good health. He creates a small yellow crystal and asks her to give it to Lea, saying it will help restore her stamina. She starts to leave, then stops and asks Xenilla what happened when Junior's body started turning red. She had seen it in his nightmares before but didn't know the context. He explains it is the Burning Form, which heavily amplifies their powers, but if used for too long causes a Meltdown, which was what killed their father. He begs her to promise that she do her best to protect Junior and make sure he never takes that form again. Junior will never forgive or listen to him, so he needs her to do it. Shaken up at what she had been told, she promises and leaves.

Destroyah walks in and looks over his injuries, saying he'll live. He says everyone knows the big secret now, and asks when exactly she figured it out. She says about four or five years ago, when they were constantly fighting and reigning in the other Mutations and stopping them from just annihilating cities that didn't have a Defender in the area. Add in the fact Xenilla always refers to Junior as his brother and the pieces fell into place. The two talk about how if Xenilla hadn't done his scheme, a vast majority of the human race would likely have been wiped out and many of the Defenders would likely have fallen with them. The GDF had improved to the point it was able to fight off Kaiju and the alien invaders. He asks why she stayed with him even after learning that he never intended the Mutations to win. She talks about how after her battle with Godzilla Senior, he found her remains and restored her to life. The first thing she asked was her origins. Through hacking the Internet, he learned that she had been spawned from the Oxygen Destroyer created by Dr. Serizawa and then rediscovered by Dr. Ijuin. After learning about how terrible the weapon is, Xenilla had been monitoring Terra to make sure no one would ever rediscover how to make it.

"I have a lot to answer for and a lot more to try and fix, but I won’t force you to answer with me. I release you… To put it in your words, you are no longer any weapon of mine."

The point is, as she was created from a weapon, she is a weapon herself, and a weapon just destroys what it is pointed at, no questions asked. As long as he pointed her in the right direction, she fought for him and didn't care about his schemes. She suddenly gets a disturbed look on her face and asked what would have happened to her if the plan to kill off the Mutations on Solgell Island had worked. Surprised, he says he would have allowed her to go her own way, and would have even taken her to an uninhabited planet if she wanted. She looks out the window and stares fondly at the countryside and Ponyville in the distance. Xenilla infers that she wants to stay in Equestria. She confirms this, saying for the first time in a long time she is truly happy with the friends she had made, and wants to live her life as a pony. Xenilla agrees, then shocks her by saying as of this moment, he releases her from his service; she is no longer his weapon. She gives a real smile that really affects him, but the moment is spoiled when she nudges him and accidentally presses too hard, aggravating his injured ribs. She tells him to recover, as Terra will need him. As she leaves, he reminds her that Dr. Daisuke Serizawa didn't originally plan for the Oxygen Destroyer to be a weapon, but used it as one to save lives. She is more than just a weapon, and it's her choice to live her life. Very happy, she tells him not to die and walks out.

How do you forgive?

In a neighboring ward, Princess Celestia watches over Princess Cadance. She feeds her some tea, which soothes her stomach. Cadance asks what happened to her, and Celestia shocks her by announcing she is pregnant. Cadance numbly remarks that must be why she's been so tired and hungry lately. Celestia is very happy for her. She explains that she's actually far along her pregnancy, but her larger Alicorn body helped hide the baby bump. Cadance asks to see her husband, so Celestia lets in a disheveled Shining Armor and tells him his wife and child are fine. Celestia walks out and meets Luna, who reports that Mothra Lea and Xenilla will recover. Luna is worried because the situation with Xenilla and Junior reminds her of when she became Nightmare Moon and tried to kill Celestia. She asks how easy it was for Celestia to forgive her, and Celestia says it's hard to explain. Luna is very worried about Junior. Back when he was trying to kill Xenilla on the mountain and going through Meltdown, he was like a whole different person. And when he cancelled his attack and left, he seemed scared of himself and what he had become. Luna asks how they can get Junior to forgive his brother. Celestia answers that Equestria is a land of second chances, but it is a choice all have to make themselves. They have no right to force the brothers to reconcile. Luna turns to leave, but Celestia warns her that Junior might not want to be found yet.

On the train to Canterlot, the traveler meets a member of the Royal Guard who is moping. She asks what is wrong, and he says he feels like a failure. His ancestors are all famous guards, soldiers, and police officers, and he hasn't been able to live up to their reputations. Whenever something big happens, he's never around to help. He wasn't in Canterlot when Discord started turning it upside down, he was on vacation when King Sombra attacked the first time, he wasn't on call when Sombra returned and tried to assassinate Princess Cadance, and he missed an earlier train to Canterlot so he wasn't there when the Royals stopped Godzilla's attack on Xenilla. The traveler asks why he wants so badly to be a hero, and he says he always wanted to help others, and it tears him up inside whenever ponies get hurt and he wasn't there to prevent it. The traveler says at least he's not doing it for fame and glory so he's doing it for the right reasons. He says he wishes he weren't so useless.

She asks what he was doing during the last few incidents. He says when Sombra returned, he was busy helping clean up the debris from when Xenilla chased Sombra through the streets. He was originally on the train that held Cadance, Shining Armor, and Xenilla, but when it stopped in Ponyville, he got sidetracked by helping a colt retrieve his lost toy and escorting a crying trio of fillies (the Cutie Mark Crusaders) home, so he was too late to get back on the train before it left. She tells him he's selling himself short. Sure, what he had done so far may not feel significant, but the little things add up, and he's certainly a hero to those children he helped. He has a good heart, and if he keeps doing good deeds, the world will be a better place. He is extremely grateful. The train arrives in Canterlot and she asks for his name. He is Flash Sentry. She is about to leave the train, then stops and asks for help visiting a member of the Royal Guard. As thanks for cheering him up, he offers to fly her there himself, and she accepts.

Flash and the traveler meet Cached Ire and Hammerbolt and Flash asks for his friend to have permission to enter the castle. They look her over and confirm she isn't armed or a member of the paparazzi, so they allow her in. She thanks them and bids Flash farewell.

As Celestia begins to lower the sun, the traveler runs into Princess Luna and asks for her help. Luna is a bit surprised because the mare doesn't seem to be intimidated or worshipful of her at all. The traveler says she is not from Equestria so she doesn't know her way around, but she would like to see Godzilla Junior. Suspicious, Luna casts her Aura Vision and is surprised at what she sees. She asks how she knows Junior and the traveler smiles.

Luna and the traveler leave the castle through a side gate. Luna had just finished explaining what recently happened. Luna has a hunch as to where Junior may be and leads the way.

Family reunion.

As they enter the site of Star Swirl the Bearded's grave, the traveler had just finished telling of the time Junior ate the flowers her boyfriend Kazuma Aoki tried to give her. Luna remarks it explains why Junior gave her a rose bush and told her to enjoy the snack. The traveler is amused at the fact Junior gave her roses. They arrive but see no sign of Junior, so Luna says she must have been mistaken. The traveler says she'll take it from here and begins singing a lullaby in Japanese while walking towards a nearby lake. As she finishes, she sees a dark shape in the water. Completely unafraid, she says it is okay and to come to her. Godzilla Junior emerges from the water, still covered with scars and burns from his Meltdown. Although she is a pony, he recognizes her scent and voice. "Mother?" Azusa Aoki nee Gojo holds her son's face with her hooves and remarks on how she can finally hear and understand his voice.

Shocked, Junior asks how she is here. She says it's not important and she won't be staying long, but what matters is that she heard her son needed her. They hug, with him very careful not to crush her. After she is sure he is calm now, she asks him to tell her everything. As they chew on some flowers, he verifies what Luna said about Xenilla, adding that Lora and Moll say it is the truth as well. Amazed, she remarks that no one in the GDF would have guessed that Xenilla had created a staged war to toughen up the Defenders. Junior says the worse part is that even after learning this and learning Xenilla had not attacked Lea, he still hated him and wanted to kill him. He didn't want to forgive him. He was acting just like Godzilla Senior.

She asks what he means, and he says while he loved and respected his father, he knows Senior was not a good guy and does not want to emulate that side of him. Blade Dancer and Luna protected Xenilla and he was tempted to just go right through them to finish him off. He asks if he is bad for being tempted to do something evil. She assures him that he's not, because he resisted the temptation. He warns that he could still lose control some day. Besides, ever since learning that the war against the Mutations was fake, he feels he never truly accomplished anything. She says that's nonsense. She's been keeping track and she knows he's personally responsible for saving 130 million people ever since he started fighting. The Anteversers and the aliens do not work for Xenilla so the fights against them were all real. She asks why he fights, and he answers to stop innocents from dying. He still worries that he may lose control and truly become a monster.

She remembers how through the decades, many humans were wary of Junior and thought he was just a monster like the others. She says we all just have to trust each other. If he wants to prove he's not like Senior or the first Godzilla, he should try something they never did: forgive. Incredulous, he says he doesn't think he can ever forgive Xenilla. She says not to forget the things he had done, but to let his anger go so one of them doesn't end up dead. In the distance, Luna watches this exchange with hope. Azusa pulls the newspaper out of her headband and turns to the picture of Moonbeam Glimmer and asks him to hear her side of the story and resolve their issues. He promises to try.

He says something has been bugging him for years. Back when she asked the telepath Miki Saegusa to ask Senior to adopt him, how did she know he would? She answers she knew he would ever since Senior's battle with Biollante. She pauses to ask what happened to her, and Junior says Biollante wants to be left alone and he respects her wishes. Anyway, Miki read Senior's mind and found out the reason why Senior sought Biollante out and why he later sought him out was because he was lonely and wanted to find more of his kind. Junior thinks about this, then remembers how Senior hated humans and wonders if Senior would be mad at him for protecting them. She says no, everything they know and observed proved Godzilla Senior loved his son dearly and would be proud of him no matter what he did. She suggests he spend the rest of his time in Equestria enjoying his life and friends, then suggestively talks about him and Luna, embarrassing him. They spend several hours chatting about sights either had seen so far in Equestria, about the depths of the ocean and the trials of teaching, about friends gained and happy marriages endured; and about happiness. Just as Junior's injuries all heal, Azusa starts to fade away. They tearfully hug and she sings her lullaby, which echoes through the glade even after she disappears.

I am proud of you.

Azusa finds herself in a dark void and back in her human form. She thanks the entity who brought her to Equestria. The teenage Alicorn asks if it worked, saying the time travel spell she used to bring her to Azusa will only work once. Azusa says she has calmed Junior down and whether or not he kills Xenilla will be his choice. The Alicorn opens a portal to Azusa's home in San Francisco. Azusa asks why the white and pink Alicorn is sad, and she says her parents were killed shortly after she was born, and listening to Azusa and Junior's conversation opened up old wounds. She thinks about how she wanted to do so much more, to warn everyone about Bagan and Grogar, but her aunt Twilight Sparkle warned her that changing the past too much could be disastrous. She is Empress Flurry Heart, the future daughter of Cadance and Shining Armor. Before Azusa leaves, she hugs Flurry Heart and assures that her parents would be proud of her, because she is proud of her. Flurry Heart, who has a scarred face and an artificial wing, hugs her back and thanks her.
