Recap / Leave It To Beaver S 01 E 01

Go To

Directed by Norman Tokar

Written Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher

Beaver thinks the worst when his teacher (Diane Brewster) sends him home with a sealed letter.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Character Title: Beaver Gets "Spelled"
  • Corporal Punishment:
    • Beaver worries that Miss Canfield might hit him for losing the note she gave him. Wally tells him "only the Coach can hit you."
    • Beaver refuses to come home after deciding to run away, citing this as his main concern. He, of course, does this while in a tree with an audience, so Ward has to pretend this is a method of discipline he wouldn't even consider using—only for Beaver to point out the time he got spanked for spilling ink on the rug.
  • Enthusiastic Newbie Teacher: Miss Canfield, who is explicitly mentioned as being new to teaching the second grade. She gets some good advice from the principal about working with this age group, and at the end, there's a heartwarming moment between her and Beaver about them both being new to the grade and she asks him for pointers.
  • Prefers Proper Names: One of the points of contention between Beaver and Miss Canfield is that she refuses to call him by anything other than his given name of Theodore.
  • Skipping School: Beaver skips school when he finds out his mother has been called down to the building by the principal, afraid he's going to be in trouble both for lying out the note and whatever was in the note.
