Written by David Polsky

Somewhere out in space, there is a galaxy filled with peaceful, colorful moons that are kept under the watchful eye of guardians called the Moonflowers. One day, however, a mysterious black cloud emerged out of nowhere and started engulfing the moons whole, reducing them to grey, barren rocks. No Moonflower has ever withstood this force of darkness, and all hope for the galaxy's survival seems lost...

While this happens, a sleeping baby floats through space and finds a tiny flower seed, gently blowing it away. The seed lands onto a thriving moon where it bursts into a rainbow, and out bursts a little girl with a flower on her head—a newborn Moonflower. Immediately excited to find out where she is, the Moonflower sees a group of small bunny-like creatures of assorted colors. Overcome by their cuteness, she chases the little critters and accidentally scares them away. As soon as she wonders what she's supposed to be doing, she is approached by the floating baby, who hands her a white popsicle-shaped object with a face, and leaves her with a single word of instruction: "grow".

The critters quickly return, enticed by the Moonflower's new "treasure", which gets swiped by the red critter. The Moonflower gives chase, eventually finding Red using her treasure to try and break a giant rock that has landed on his house. Feeling sorry for Red, the Moonflower agrees to give him a hand. In doing so, she accidentally drops her treasure, which is picked up by one of the other critters. Red and the rest of the critters soon begin fighting over it until the Moonflower finally gets fed up and storms off to fix the house without the treasure, literally turning red with anger.

Abandoning the treasure, the critters decide to join the Moonflower in repairing Red's house. However, it isn't long before the yellow critter comes back with the treasure, starting the whole argument all over again. Seeing the Moonflower continue to work all by herself, Red and the rest of the critters have a full change of heart and help her move the house to a safe spot. Yellow gives back the Moonflower's treasure, which turns red like she is and sinks into the ground, where it sprouts into a red, angry-faced tree. The sleeping baby returns and, after giving the Moonflower another treasure, finally reveals her name: Hanazuki.

From a barren moon far away, another Moonflower surrounded by piles of treasure watches through her telescope as the black cloud of darkness is driven back by waves emitted by the red tree. She scoffs at the "newbie's" luck, ominously stating that it is eventually bound to run out...

Tropes:

  • All There in the Script: Apart from Hanazuki and the pyramid with a face, every character's name is revealed through the credits in the episode: the sleeping baby is Little Dreamer, the little bunny critters are Hemkas, and the Moonflower narrator who appears in the end is Kiazuki.
  • Buffy Speak: Since Hanazuki doesn't know anyone's names, she resorts to this to addressing others. In particular, she calls Little Dreamer "Flying Sleepy Guy" and "Little Snoozy Man".
  • Cuteness Proximity: The first thing Hanazuki does upon seeing the adorable Hemkas is chase after them to squeeze them. Their cuteness eventually wears thin on her as she grows more annoyed by their fighting.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Kiazuki's description of the black moon-destroying cloud can be summed up as this.
Kiazuki: No one's sure what it is, or where it came from, or what it wants. Some moons can withstand it. Others...not so much. We Moonflowers are supposed to protect the moons of this galaxy. Against this, though...we never win.
