Recap / Half Life Hazard Course

Go To

The tutorial mission for Half-Life. Aided by a holographic assistant that takes the form of Gina Cross (the protagonist of Half-Life: Decay), Gordon is put through the "Black Mesa Hazard Course" where the player learns basic first-person movements, and how other mechanics and gun-play in the game works.

This Chapter contains examples of:

  • Insurmountable Waist-High Fence: All jump, crouch and crouch jump sections have the fences installed to prevent the player from cheating and skipping their objective; despite looking exactly the same as the fences on the edges of platforms (which can be jumped over if the player wishes so), those are impassable.
  • Tutorial Mission: Serves as the tutorial for the original Half-Life.
  • Video Game Cruelty Punishment: Attacking scientists or security guards in the final section of tutorial leads to autoturrets activating and attacking the player, potentially gunning them down (though they can easily be destroyed with grenades); doing so prematurely also makes tutorial unwinnable (as any violence would make people unwilling to help you open the door). There's no punishment for killing the security guard in flashlight tutorial area, however (possibly because it wasn't expected that the player can reach him at all).
