Meet Melinda Gordon. She just got married, moved to a small town, and opened an antique store. She seems like your average, everyday kind of woman. Unbeknownst to many, however, Melinda has a gift—-she can see and talk to ghosts. It’s her job to help the ghosts make peace with the ones they left behind so they can cross over into the afterlife.
This episode provides examples of:
- Distant Prologue: The very first scene of the series is Melinda as a little girl with her grandmother, who helps her realize she can see and talk to ghosts.
- Establishing Character Moment: Melinda’s grandmother is in the first scene, where she helps Melinda realize a man she sees at the funeral is actually the deceased, and encourages her to help him tell his wife one final goodbye. Even though she is never shown outside of the occasional flashback, Melinda’s grandmother is strongly implied throughout the series to have been her mentor and best friend and ally while Melinda was growing up with her gift, before she died when Melinda was in high school.
- Someone to Remember Him By: Paul’s wife was pregnant with their son Micheal when he died in the Vietnam War. When Paul finally awakens, Micheal is all grown up, married, and expecting a child of his own.
- Woobie of the Week: Paul Adams, who died in the Vietnam War and needs Melinda’s help contacting his family.
