• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mr. Dominic may come off as gruff, brusque and standoffish at times. But Paninya has nothing but good things to say about him, considering he bestowed her automail legs when she was but a crippled little ophan girl. And she didn't even ask for his help: he just took one look at her and decided to help her out of spontaneous kindness.
• Life/Death Juxtaposition: Played with. In the previous episode, the audience witnessed the untimely death of Maes Hughes. This episode at one point involves Winry helping a mother safely give birth to her baby.
• Mass "Oh, Crap!": Played for laughs. After Ed tells Winry that the baby's coming, she's the first to freak out. When Winry tells everyone that they're going to have to deliver the baby without a doctor present, everyone else freaks out.
• When He Smiles: Mr. Dominic is normally grouchy and never smiles, even when he's helping complete strangers. But after his grandson is born, Dominic gives the goofiest, happiest little smile as he gushes over the baby. Ed even lampshades how out-of-character it is for him.
