6B

The strange deaths of six partygoers in an apartment building leads Walter to believe that the same damage to the fabric of spacetime that is common in the alternate universe is beginning to occurr in the prime one, and with Massive Dynamic's help, prepares to encase the building in amber. Meanwhile, Olivia discovers that a widow living in the building, Alice, has formed an "emotional quantum entanglement" with the the alternate version of her deceased husband, Derek, which is keeping a crack between the universes open. With Olivia and Peter's help, Alice is able to recognize that the man she is seeing is not her husband, severing the ties between them and closing the crack, before ambering the building is necessary. The experience with Alice and Derek helps Olivia with her Fauxlivia issues enough to spend the night with Peter, while Walter worries over coming so close to emulating Walternate's behaviour.

TROPES

  • Godzilla Threshold: Walter realizes the soft spot between universes in Apartment 6B may be the start of the vortexes that have devastated the Other Side and prepares to Amber the entire building. He and the rest of the Fringe team know this is a worst-case scenario.
  • Heads or Tails?: The Merchants flipped a coin to decide who would fix a fuse. In the Prime Universe, Derek lost the flip and was killed by a short in the fuse box; in the Other Side, Alice died.
  • Impostor Forgot One Detail: A non-malicious variant. Alice finally realizes that the Derek from the other side is not her husband when he brings up their children; in the Prime Universe, they were childless.
  • Shout-Out: To Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. The action takes place in the Rosencrantz building; like the play, a coin flip is crucial to the plot. Walter also flips a coin ten times, and it comes up heads each time.
