Recap / Fates Collide Ch 35 A Child's Happiness

Go To

In a room full of stuffed animals, Ruby and Jack the Ripper have a tea party. Jack wears a white gown and Ruby wears the pink dress she bought earlier. Nursery Rhyme sits to the side reading a book, and Jack comments she tends to do that. Mercury reluctantly acts as a butler. He tells them the tea is almost ready, so they tell him to bring it along with snacks. As he walks back to the kitchen, he sees a photo of a younger Jack in the arms of a beautiful woman. He comments now he knows what Jack's mother looks like and she is hot. With no father in the picture, he guesses she is a single mother.

In the kitchen, the tea is boiling and he starts looking for snacks. He notices for the first time that there is a huge pile of dirty food containers in the sink, and since the sink is too tall for Jack to reach, it means her mother has not used it in a while. He looks in the fridge and finds more containers with hearts in them, horrifying him. He finds a note from her mother, saying that she will be gone for a couple of days to visit friends in a nearby town. Atalanta will check on her and Nursery Rhyme from time to time. According to the date on it, the note is over a week old, yet it said she would only be gone for a couple of days. He thinks something is not right.

Atalanta walks in and mistakes him for an intruder, but he defuses the situation by explaining who he is and what he is doing here. She has some bad news: she just found out the town Jack's mother Reika went to was wiped out by the Grimm, so she is dead. Mercury is sad to hear that and asks what will happen to Jack. Atalanta says the school has arrangements for orphans, as they are quite common. Reika was a prostitute, so they don't know who Jack's father is, but she truly loved Jack, and she adopted Nursery Rhyme after her parents were killed. Atalanta adds that she doesn't know who her parents are, either, but was told they were forced to leave Apocrypha and couldn't take her with them. Mercury confides that he doesn't know who his mother is. The two wonder how they can tell Jack the news without destroying her.

Ruby walks up and says she heard everything. She's suffered being told her mother was dead, so she knows what it is like and can tell Jack. They agree and say they will talk to Nursery Rhyme, but ask her to change back into her regular clothes because her pink dress looks ridiculous.

In her room, Pyrrha tries to bend the golden lance with Polarity, but laments it is impossible. Fou chews on the lance, making her giggle, then runs to Mash when she enters the room. Mash is back in her normal clothes and carries a textbook and a paper. She is tired from training with Jaune and says she got back her report on polarity that Pyrrha had helped her on earlier. To Pyrrha's chagrin, she got a B-. Pyrrha asks how that is possible, as she is an expert on the subject, and Mash says the professor told her it was missing a lot of facts. The professor gave her a book on the subject and told her she can redo the paper to try to get a higher grade, but she's exhausted and will stick with her current grade. She falls asleep. Pyrrha decides to read the book.

Mercury and Atalanta ask Nursery Rhyme to come with them, then Ruby confronts Jack. Jack asks what happened to her dress, but Ruby says this is important. She says Jack's mother loved her. Jack says she knows that, and asks about Ruby's mother. Ruby says her mother was amazing, and even though she is gone, she will never forget her. Jack starts to cry and says she had a nightmare that her mother was dead, and know she knows it came true. She asks if remembering the happy times makes the pain go away. Ruby hugs her and says with time, it will.

Mercury and Atalanta finish telling Nursery Rhyme the news, who takes it better. Mercury tells her she needs to be there for Jack. She asks if he will be there for them as well. Despite himself, he agrees and she hugs him. She says she needs to return her book to the library and asks if he will have dinner with them. He agrees again and asks himself what he is doing. He is getting attached, exactly what he warned Emerald about. Atalanta says she will do what she can to help and tells Mercury she respects him for being kind to children.
