Note: For the sake of simplicity, this Recap page will assume a True Ending playthrough.

Prologue

Deep in a forest, Zephy, a Knight of Requiem, runs for his life. He's attacked by a dragon and feels himself dying... until he is saved by two mysterious figures, Minessa and Karikaro, who drive off the dragon and give him an emergency transfusion of dragon's blood, saving his life. Unfortunately, these two figures are witches, magical beings the Knights have sworn to kill and all of humanity despises. And true to all the terrible stories Zephy has heard, the two plan to use him to save their friend, Laponette, who was just captured by the Knights.

Chapter 1

Taken prisoner by Minessa and Karikaro and forced to participate in their rescue plan or die lost and alone in the forest, Zephyr reluctantly joins them. Trouble starts, however, when he has mysterious chest pains and the witches discover he bares their mark, and he somehow has gained the powers of a witch.

The group eventually manages to find the main unit of the Knights, and Zephy tries to rejoin them. However, Commander Corberia cuts him off, realizing that he's a witch now and must be hunted. A rebel dragon-hunting group called the Ravens comes in to fight the Knights, and a three-way battle ensues. Forced to take up arms against his former allies, Zephy quickly learns to use his new magic and flying skills, but faints shortly after.

Minessa decides that he's one of them now and takes them to their secret hideout, their Witches' Den.

Chapter 2

Zephy awakes in the Witches' Den and meets the Little Sisters, young witches that need to be cared for and fed dragon meat by their "older sisters" less they go mad from the Witch's Curse. Unfortunately, one of them is missing, a little girl named Ruruta. Minessa is distraught, Zephy offers to look for her, and with a tip from the informant, Darne, the witches head to the nearby Sanctuary to look for Ruruta.

Along the way, they meet a mysterious woman calling herself the Witch of Hellfire, an infamous witch who slaughtered countless of her own kind and razed several other Dens in a tragedy called the Carnival of Death. Somehow, she gives the party information about Ruruta's location and they hurry to try and save her. Unfortunately, it's too late: Ruruta has been consumed by the curse, transforms into a mindless dragon, and the party has to put her out of her misery.

The Witch of Hellfire reintroduces herself as Charlotta and offers a way to lift the Witch's Curse, inviting them to go to the Star Temples.

Chapter 3

In grief at the loss of Ruruta, one of the Little Sisters, Faria, decides to stop drinking dragon blood and eating dragon meat and locks herself in her room. Already out of food, the witches decide to go hunting for dragon meat. Meanwhile, Charlotta has a mysterious conversation with someone.

Now back with food, Zephyr helps the witches cook a meal and manage to coax Faria out of her room. Zephyr is invited to join them at the table and the little sisters proceed to bombard him with questions.

The next day, the group leaves for the Star Temple with Charlotta. Faria asks to join them, but in an actual battle, she loses her will and they decide to bring her back to the Den. Meanwhile, the little sisters left behind visit the graveyard and pray for Ruruta. A mysterious witch appears and offers to pray with them.

Chapter 4

Charlotta agrees to join the group, much to the displeasure of the older sisters who she Charlotta constantly annoys, and the joy of the little sisters, who're happy to welcome a new witch. Faria is especially glad, as Charlotta agrees to take her on as an apprentice and teach her how to fight.

The party decides to keep a close eye on Charlotta as they attempt to travel to the North Star Temple.

The group explores the Temple, defeats several dragons, and meets an especially strong guardian dragon—one that, unlike most every other they've encountered, is clearly intelligent. They defeat it and Charlotta explains that the inner sanctum is protected by a strong barrier, one they can only pass by eating the guardian dragon's flesh. Though reluctant to eat an intelligent being, the group agrees for the sake of lifting the Curse.

They enter the inner sanctum but find no clues except molded, useless texts. With her power of Clairvoyance, Laponette has a haunting vision of a woman with pale hands strangling him to death.

Chapter 5

On the way back to the Den, the party once more runs into a fight between the Ravens and the Knights of Requiem. They planned to avoid battle until Zephy sees his old friend, Gran, about to be killed by a dragon, and the party reluctantly joins in to save him. Afterwards, Gran explains that the Empire has dispatched a team to investigate Zephy's old home for mysterious reasons.

The group pass through the Wilderness of Spells, where they are stopped by Commander Corberia. The witches agree to leave so Zephy can speak to Commander Corberia privately. She makes an offer to accept Zephy back into the Knights if he gives up the location of the Den. As Zephy contemplates this decision, Laponette remembers her vision: a pale woman's hands strangling him to death.

Thinking it's Corberia, Laponette rushes back to help Zephy... only to suddenly find herself losing her mind and strangling him, instead.

The group realize that Laponette's attacking Zephy was because of a bracelet the Ravens have created, one capable of manipulating and controlling dragons. They explain the situation to a distraught Laponette, the group reconcile, and they prepare to journey to another Star Temple.

Chapter 6

Instead of heading to another Star Temple right away, the group end up taking the little sisters to a nearby river to go fishing. Minessa refuses at first but Zephy changes her mind. After much-needed R&R, the group continue their journey to the South Star Temple.

Unfortunately, they find that the Guardian Dragon has escaped the Temple, approaching the nearby town. They chase it down, and end up going shopping, taking advantage of the guards never suspecting a bunch of witches to just casually stroll into town. However, the Guardian Dragon arrives, they fend it off, and soon after to run into the Ravens, who were also after it. The group battles the Ravens and come out victorious, but have to return to the temple to face the Guardian Dragon.

The group defeats it at the heart of the Star Temple, they discover that Charlotta had been lying to them: there was no barrier, they did not need to eat the Guardian Dragons. After pressing her for answers, they discover the truth:

The Witches are only meant to birth the next Dragon Star, Varnir, the world's god who watches over the world and prevents its destruction. The many witches that lose their minds and transform into dragons are those who fail to meet the strict requirements to become the Dragon Star.

Worried about Minessa and the other girls, Zephy decides to cut ties with the Knights and permanently lives in the Den. At the same time, Charlotta's tutoring bears fruit and Faria joins the older sisters in combat.

Chapter 7

The group decides to go visit Zephy's home, in order to find some answers about the Empire's activities. When they arrive, the place has been ransacked, but Zephy is happy to see a drawing by his mother is intact. Though allegedly a map of a fairy tale world, Zephy and the others quickly realize the "towns" she marked on it were Witches' Dens, and that her cryptic warning for Zephy to go to them for help was pointing him straight to the witches.

Unfortunately, the Empire's soldiers return, and though the group successfully hides, one of them sees the map and decides to take it back. With all the other Dens destroyed, the group realizes it's only a matter of time before the Knights raid their Den and hurry after them.

Chapter 8

Despite going through shortcuts, the group are no match for the speed of the Knights' horses, and the messengers enter the Imperial City. Unable to sneak in this time, the group tries to find a way in and find a doctor sneaking around the walls. Posing as a Knight, Zephy speaks to him and discovers he's the Emperor's private doctor, trying to find a hidden passage so as to not alarm the people that the most powerful man in the country may be sick or unwell. The group knock the doctor out, tie him to a post, and proceed into the underground passage leading to the Emperor's chambers.

Unfortunately, after so many years of disuse, the passageway has become infested with dragons. The group fight their way into the palace, where they discover that the Emperor has stolen all manner of research from Zephy's home and his mother's diary. There, they discover that she was actually a witch.

Zephy and the party don't have time to process the shock when the Cardinal and the Emperor enter, with the latter being visibly shaken, unwell, and mysteriously ecstatic at witches having infiltrated the palace. The Cardinal also decides to let them go free, ostensibly because he doesn't want a panic at one of the most secure places in the kingdom being infiltrated by their worst enemies, all while the Emperor has taken ill.

The group leaves before the guards have a chance to find them, only to realize during the ensuing chaos that rogue dragons have begun attacking the city. Reluctantly, they fend them off and save the citizens before returning to the Den.

On the way back, the Informant, Darne, has a message for Charlotta, who breaks away from the group. Concerned, Zephy follows after her but quickly loses her tail. He does run into someone, however: Ruby Eyes, the mysterious leader of the Ravens, who confesses she's the true "Witch of Hellfire", Bendica, who has a mysterious grudge against Charlotta.

Chapter 9

The group come back home and reconcile with all the hard truths they've learned. Zephy comes to terms with his being a half-human witch hybrid. Charlotta finally returns and announces that she's immediately setting out to the Forest of Death for mysterious reasons. Concerned and curios, Zephy convinces the others to follow after her.

At the heart of the inhospitable, dangerous Forest of Death, they find a small, forgotten grave. Charlotta explains it belongs to a young witch who fell in love with a human a century ago, and shortly after, she reveals her true identity: she is an aspect of the Dragon Star, Varnir, an immortal being meant to find its replacement and ensure the world does not come to an end.

She also explains her connection to Bendica: Charlotta intentionally tries not to cultivate any emotional ties to other witches, knowing she'll have to convince one of them to sacrifice themselves and become the new Dragon Star, hence her unpleasant behavior. Bendica ends up befriending her regardless, however, and Charlotta sees her as a great candidate, revealing the truth of the world and the Witch's Curse before "dying" once more. Unfortunately, Bendica does not take well to the truth and decides that between scores of her fellow sisters being driven to madness, tragedy, and persecution because of the needs of a mysterious god and death, she would choose the latter for all of them and enacts the Carnival of Death.

Charlotta arises again, too late to stop Bendica, but just in time to see a potential Dragon Star: Minessa, one of the survivors of the Carnival of Death. In secret, she starts to orchestrate the events that led to Zephy joining the party.

Chapter 10

The group asks Charlotta how to become the Dragon Star, over dinner, the group begins to come to terms with one of them needing to sacrifice themselves to become Dragon Star.

The next morning, they leave for the last Star Temple, in the West. The group encounter a huge and powerful Guardian Dragon, even stronger than before... and using her clairvoyance, Laponette discovers it's Zephyr's mother. He had originally thought that she was killed by a dragon who had also murdered his father, and now realizes that his mother had instead fallen to the Witch's Curse. Though worried that he will be distraught at the thought of killing her, Zephy assures them that he will be glad to put her out of her suffering, the party does, and they say a prayer for Zephy's mother's soul.

Afterwards, Charlotta explains how to become the Dragon Star without having to consume dragons: drink a vial of her blood, the blood of Varnir. As they try to leave, however, they're attacked by Durandol, the second-in-command of the Ravens. Having now learned that his leader was secretly a witch and the group's research and invention of magical technology using dragons was all a ruse for Bendica's goals, he angrily tries to slaughter the party out of anger for all witches... only to be suddenly turned to ash by Bendica herself.

Realizing she's too powerful, the group flees and returns to the Den. Meanwhile, the Little Sisters reveal that they've been studying and translating the ancient texts that the group recovered from the temples or never bothered to study, gleaning new, important information about the Dragon Star.

Interlude

Having visited all the Star Temples and learned the truth of the Dragon Star, the group heads for the Sanctuary Cave, where Charlotta says something lies further beyond what they know. However, they are stopped by Commander Corberia and her Knights.

They learn that after being driven mad by the revelation that Empire and their religion were all based on lies, the Emperor hung himself, and the Cardinal, respecting His Majesty's last wishes, issues a decree to stop all witch hunts. Furious, Corberia decides to go rogue and attack the witches regardless, with the help of flying devices she'd stolen from the Ravens at an earlier point in the story.

Chapter 11 (True)

The party returns to the Den, all having made the resolution to become the Dragon Star. They try to head to the Sanctuary, but the Informant, Darne, warns them of the Ravens' secret project: a device to control dragons, beyond the abilities of the prototype that had brainwashed Laponette. Though with the death of Durandol and the reveal of Bendica being a witch, the Ravens tried to destroy all their technology, Bendica had managed to steal it back.

Realizing how much of a threat Bendica has become, the group hurry after her and learn that she's trying to use the device to kill the Dragon Star, bringing about the end of the world and all the suffering of the Witches. With the help of the little sisters, and Charlotta personally apologizing for all the pain that she has brought Bendica, Bendica decides to halt her plan and goes deeper into the Star's Womb.

The group arrive at the heart and prepare to sacrifice one of them to become the Dragon Star... but Bendica suddenly grabs the vial and drinks it herself. Varnir chooses her as a worthy successor, but to prove it, the group must defeat the dying god to ensure the world can be protected. They succeed, Bendica becomes the new Dragon Star, and the world is safe.

With the Knights of Requiem no longer persecuting them, the Ravens collapsing from the deaths or betrayal of their leaders, and the Witch's Curse lifted for this generation, the group triumphantly return to the Den. Charlotta, however, says her farewell, saying her job as Varnir's avatar is over and she must "die" once more, till Bendica nears the end of her life and the cycle of choosing a new Dragon Star must begin anew. The group tearfully separates from her and continues to live their lives...

... Until a month after, where they pay their respects to Bendica at the Star's Womb and run into Charlotta, who cheerfully declares she's rejoining the group early. Meanwhile, they accidentally discover a hidden path to the West Star Temple, a forgotten prison where the most dangerous dragons were sealed off.

Excited at the prospect of a new adventure and reassured that they can always run if it gets too dangerous, the group ventures in.
