- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When drawing up designs for his robot, Calvin lists off the four simple machines to alter force: The lever, the pulley, the inclined plane, and...the internal combustion engine.
- Bittersweet Ending: Yes, Calvin and Hobbes spend their entire day trying to build a robot before ultimately accepting that they can't figure it out. But they never had to actually make Calvin's bed, which was their original intention behind making the robot, so they still achieve their goal.
- Laborious Laziness: It would take Calvin two minutes at most to make his bed, but he ends up spending his entire day trying to build a robot to do it for him. When Hobbes points this out, Calvin says that it only counts as work if someone is making him do it.
