Recap / Akane No Guilty Crown Chapter I

Go To

It is the year 2039. Ten years since a horrific disaster struck Tokyo on Christmas Eve 2029. This event was named Lost Christmas. The disaster came in the form of a pandemic; it was the result of the Apocalypse Virus. Having become the epicenter of this crisis, Japan called for immediate international help from an organization called GHQ to contain the virus from spreading within the country. However, it came at a cost.

Japan was forced to surrender its identity to receive aid, including food, water, and other essential resources from GHQ. Yet because of this, GHQ imposed harsh authority and implemented authoritarian governance that Japan could not resist. GHQ even established the citadel in the center of Tokyo to consolidate its sovereignty: the GHQ headquarters known as Ward 24.

It has been nearly 10 years since that terrible pandemic. And while the virus continues to infect civilians, thanks to medical breakthroughs and vaccinations, the virus has been contained and civilians were able to resume their normal lives under GHQ's authoritarian watch.

Among these civilians that have managed to get by with a normal routine is a student going to Tennouzu High School in Roppongi.

Today would just be another normal day for this average student entering another year in Tennouzu High.

And that student is named Shu Ouma. He and his classmates are being introduced to two exchange students that are siblings: Heath and Akiko Jones, in which they come from Sakai, Osaka. After some interesting introductions, Shu heads back to his club's hideout where he encounters the famous singer, Inori Yuzuriha. Then, GHQ and Anti-Bodies led by Major Guin kidnapped Inori, prompting Shu and Fyu-Neru, with the stolen vial in their hands, to head to the area in meeting with Funeral Parlor and their leader.

Upon meeting with Gai Tsutsugami and the resistance, they are under attack by the Anti-Bodies. The vial accidentally is injected towards Shu, gaining him the Power of the Kings in wielding Voids, as demonstrated by using Inori's sword Void in destroying Endlaves. In the morning, Funeral Parlor are rescuing hostages from Guin and Daryl's forces. Using Daryl's Void, Shu deflects the lasers fired by Guin, causing them to wipe out the Anti-Bodies.

In a last ditch of effort, Guin presses a device in unleashing a bio hybrid called the Fafnir rex, as the theropod dinosaur unleashes its fury onto Funeral Parlor. Working together with the Undertakers, Shu gains the courage to slay the Fafnir rex. Following that shows the teenager joining the resistance by Gai's offer.

Of course, the final scene shows Inori transferring to Shu's school, much to his surprise.

Tropes in this chapter:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The Episode 2 adaptation adds a battle against an experimental dinosaur following Guin’s defeat.
  • Shout-Out: Shu using Inori's sword in slicing the Fafnir rex's head in half horizontally pays tribute to Superman uses his hands to rip apart a robotic T. rex's head in Superman: The Animated Series S1 E5 "A Little Piece of Home", only that the Fafnir rex is a real monster, and the results are bloody gory.
  • Wham Shot: The ending of the chapter shows Shu willingly join Funeral Parlor, a huge contrast of his canon self initially refuse to join.
