Basic Trope: Parroting an insult back at someone.

  • Straight: Alice suspects a woman Bob is hanging out with is a wicked witch and tries to warn him. The following happens:
Alice: Bob, don't trust that woman! She's a witch!
    Bob: No, you're a witch!
  • Exaggerated: Alice accuses Bob of being a destroyer entity. Bob could deny it, but instead he accuses Alice of being a destroyer entity.
  • Downplayed: Lame Comeback.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is not good at defending his new friend.
    • Alice is a witch herself, but thinks nobody else knows. She's trying to throw suspicion off of herself by accusing others of what she is. Bob unknowingly exposes her when trying to tell her off.
  • Inverted:
    • "Bob, hang out with that woman! She's a genius!" "No, you're a genius!"
    • "Bob, I'm such a dummy." "No, I'm a dummy!"
    • "Bob, I'm such a genius." "No, I'm a genius!"
  • Subverted: "No, you're a... liar!"
  • Double Subverted: "No, you're a liar!"
  • Parodied:???
  • Zigzagged:???
  • Averted:
    • Bob doesn't respond to Alice's statement.
    • Bob's comeback does not paraphrase Alice's statement.
  • Enforced: The writers couldn't think of a comeback that didn't paraphrase Alice's line either.
  • Lampshaded: "Hey, stop using my words to insult me!"
  • Invoked:???
  • Exploited: There really is a wicked witch in Bob's social circle. She put a curse on him to make him respond like that so he would indirectly gaslight Alice.
  • Defied: Bob doesn't respond because he can't think of a comeback that doesn't include Alice's words.
  • Discussed: "Do you really think it's okay to insult people with their own words?"
  • Conserved: "Bob doesn't know how to respond to criticism without insulting people or using their words against them."
  • Implied: ???
