Basic Trope: Characters are assumed to be related, when they actually aren't.
- Straight:
- Bob is friends with Alice, who he's younger than. Some people falsely assume that Bob is Alice's dad.
- Alice thinks that Bob is her dad, when in reality he's just a friend of her mom.
- Exaggerated: Several characters are assumed to be related to each other when they actually don't even know each other at all.
- Downplayed:
- Bob is Alice's stepdad, or she's his adopted daughter, but some people think they're biologically related.
- Alice and Bob are related to each other, but they're mistaken for a different relative (e.g. Bob is actually Alice's uncle, but he's mistaken for her dad).
- Justified:
- Bob is often seen with Alice's mom, Charlene, and Alice's dad is rarely (if ever) seen. No wonder people think he's her dad.
- Alice and Bob also resemble each other.
- Inverted: Alice and Bob are related, but people don't think they are.

- Bob looks nothing at all like Alice (possibly down to even being a completely different species), but people still think they're relatives.
