Playing With / Crazy Cultural Comparison

Go To

Basic Trope Description: Characters from different cultures compare their cultures and their rites with each other.

  • Straight: Bob, a Troperian soldier, sees two Clicherian mercenaries in his army kissing each other on the mouth before battle. He is irritated since they never looked like they were in love, but the Chlicherians explain to him that this means as much as "Good luck!" or "Stay strong!" in their culture and isn't viewed as a romantic gesture.

  • Exaggerated: Bob sees the two Clicherian mercenaries have sex before battle, although they never seemed like a couple. He asks them about it and they say they just wished each other good luck with that gesture.

  • Downplayed: Kissing each other on the mouth turns out to be a "good luck" gesture in Clicheria, but only between lovers.

  • Justified: Troperians usually barely know anything about Clicherians, since both countries are quite far away from each other and their relationship was quite unfriendly for most of known history.

  • Inverted: Bob sees the two mercenaries kissing, and asks them why they are doing that. The reason is exactly that what Bob thinks of - they are lovers.

  • Subverted: The two Clicherians are saying that it would be a "good luck gesture" in their culture - but they are in fact a couple and hiding the fact by using the lack of knowledge about their culture in Troperia.

  • Double Subverted: Then another Chlicherian in the unit tells Bob that it can also only mean "good luck" and maybe should express both.

  • Enforced: The writer wants to expand their world-building a little more.

  • Averted: Bob ignores the Clicherian mercenaries in his army and never gets in touch with their culture.

  • Parodied: ???

  • Lampshaded: "Hey look, they are kissing! Strange, I didn't know they were a couple..." "Oh Bob, this is maybe only the Clicherian way to wish someone good luck or something like that. That is what they always find out in movies in such a situation."

  • Invoked: The evening before, Bob reads a book about Clicherian culture. When he sees the Clicherians kissing before battle, he asks them out of interest whether it's right that it is a "good luck" gesture for them, sparking a discussion about their cultures.

  • Defied: One of the Clicherians tries to kiss the other one before battle, but the other one tells him not to do that. "We aren't at home. This could raise awkward rumours here. Just wish me good luck."

  • Discussed: "I heard kissing means "good luck" in Clicheria. Wouldn't you want to kiss me too?"

  • Conversed: "Kissing only means "good luck" for them? A strange culture... well, it's the fantasy genre."

  • Implied: Bob sees the two mercenaries kissing before battle, but elsewhen, they never act upon each other in ways he would consider romantic or sexual. They're basically just friends, so he thinks the gesture maybe means something different to them.

  • Played for Laughs: Bob has No Social Skills and later tries this at home towards everyone he ever wishes good luck to - and doesn't understand why people get uncomfortable around him.

  • Played for Drama: Clicherians are not allowed to talk about their culture with outsiders. They have to kill Bob now, and his dangerous flight from the two Clicherians starts.
