- It's scary enough when we get the reveal that the deer effigy is a) alive and sentient, b) has been watching the protagonist this whole time, and every time she thought she heard a woodpecker it was actually this thing and c) is right outside her bedroom window looking in right now and that's why the dog is growling. It's worse when the protagonist's dog runs off into the woods and she starts worrying about him being stripped for parts and rebuilt as an effigy (he comes back just fine, but he might not have; there are effigies made of dog parts). And then it turns out it's only partly made out of deer. A lot of it was made out of Cotgrave, which is why he's stalking the house and making another effigy out of the junk.
- When she thinks that it's physically impossible to make faces like the ones on the statues, like it says in the litany, and tries it to make the point to herself. And then her face starts uncontrollably twisting to let her and she can't stop.
- On an entirely mundane front there's the chilling and accurate depiction of an abusive relationship, dementia, and mental illness.
