The name comes from the fact that the vast majority of the time, these songs are heard on playgrounds and in other public areas that have a lot of children. That doesn't stop them from coming up in other situations, though. "Children's Song," while a more generally accepted term, can also be applied to pretty much anything specifically aimed at prepubescent children (such as songs featured on ''Series/SesameStreet'' and similar TV shows). This article will focus exclusively on songs that circulate through elementary schools via memes and OralTradition. Many of these songs are in the PublicDomain, despite some of the newer playground songs explicitly referencing copyrighted works, though playground songs made specifically for copyrighted works (such as the above quote from ''Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet'') are also copyrighted themselves.

A creator may also write their own original song to mimic the effect of a playground song, but those don't necessarily count; then again, children are likely to pick up such songs made specifically for copyrighted works (such as and bring them into the above quote from ''Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet'') are also copyrighted themselves.
