- The fact that the Diviners pool their money to buy flowers for Mabel's grave, when flowers generally aren't put on Jewish graves. Mabel wasn't a religiously observant Jew and considered herself an atheist, but she was culturally Jewish and there was a rabbi at her funeral.
- While many people are aware that Jewish people put stones on graves in lieu of flowers, it seems that few gentiles know that flowers are outright unwelcome at Jewish funerals and on graves. IME, almost every Jewish funeral will receive some flowers from unaware gentile friends or acquaintances, and generally speaking, the family accepts it as the kind gesture it was meant to br, despite it being technically inappropriate.
