Funny / Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)

Go To

  • Sir Oliver's Establishing Character Moment: he reads a newspaper as he walks... right through the middle of a marching band. The band is complete with bagpipes and drums, but Sir Oliver doesn't notice a thing until he finishes reading. Then he finally sees the last few band members walking around him and is visibly confused, with an expression that just screams "Where did they come from?".
  • Alec shows up to dinner in full Scottish formal wear. Complete with kilt. He sheepishly explains what happened: his friend, the Laird of Glendarick, thought Alec's clothes weren't smart enough. So while Alec was in the bath, the laird stole his clothes and replaced them with an outfit of his own.
  • Gertrude pecking at her food is mistaken for a fellow prisoner trying to communicate through Morse code. Sir Oliver tries French and Russian without any success. Then Hans comes in and calls Gertrude's name. Sir Oliver and Alec, still stuck on the other side of the wall, think the "fellow prisoner" is a woman and Hans is her lover. Then, when Hans frees them, they discover why they couldn't get an answer.
Sir Oliver: A duck! And I was about to try Latin.
  • Alec discovers Göteborg's corpse. As in, he pulls back the blanket, sees him, replaces the blanket, moves on, then freezes as he realises what he just saw.
  • Oliver leading the others in "mourning" Göteborg.
Oliver: We'll observe one minute of silence in memory of a great scientist... Even if he was a blasted thief.
  • Oliver and Alec are having trouble procuring appropriate supplies; the local marketplace has been largely emptied by fishermen going on their first major trip for the year. Hans manages to get them some rope, but they respond by asking him to get far more supplies — which are available in Göteborg's room, but his furious widow refuses to let them have anything. Hans rolls his eyes, picks Oliver and Alec up under both arms, and literally carries them into the next room, glaring at them with an expression that screams "TALK to her, darn it!"
  • Oliver's quip after the group finds crumbling loaves of ancient bread in Atlantis.
Oliver: Stale bread. We must speak to the baker.
  • How about coming across a field of giant mushrooms? Oliver and Alec even decide to do a little dance upon the discovery, just cause.
  • One can't help but laugh when while some random woman asked Alec about his injures, she seemed to think she should be feeling sorrier for Jenny. And never mind about the poor guy who's got the broken leg. If there isn't a misplaced sympathy trope, there should be.
Random woman: Did you get your injuries when the volcano blew up, in the hot lava?
Alec: Oh no, no. It happened in Edinburgh at our wedding.
Jenny: He was in such a hurry leaving the church, he fell all the way down the steps.
Random woman: You poor wee bride. After all that waiting. It's been no marriage for you at all.
Jenny: You underestimate Alec. [snogs him]
