While Jessica switching careers from nightclub singer to detective may seem to come out of nowhere for the ride's revamp, it makes sense when you remember that in the movie, she was the one who actually figured out the culprit's identity. It's also a good way to get around the passing of Bob Hoskins, by having Jessica stand in for Eddie as the detective character.
