Fridge Brilliance

  • "The Pied Piper" is an extremely apt title for the episode about Bang Gu-ppong, and not just because of the image of him leading a line of children away from their parents. The episode's namesake fairy tale has many different versions, and the Piper's actions of spiriting away the children of Hamelin is framed in just as many ways. In most, he's Ambiguously Evil, taking the children when their parents wouldn't pay him, with no indication of what happened to them. In some, he outright kills them. However, there are a few versions where the Piper is an Anti-Hero, and Hamelin is a terrible place full of corruption, and he takes the children away from all that and to a better life. This version is certainly the one Gu-ppong would identify with, temporarily kidnapping children so they can have a day of fun away from the immense pressure their schools and parents place upon them—but the ambiguity of the Piper is very fitting for his character. Gu-ppong is a kidnapper, and while his cause is noble and maybe even heroic, his methods are morally gray at best.
