How did the protagonist (the drone controller) survive whatever threat wiped out humanity across the universe? Maybe they're not even human themselves, but an AI that can transfer itself to other ships even across vast distances. No mention of your own nature is ever made, and being an AI would explain why you have a Reset Button (that forces you to abandon everything, yet still remember what objectives you've completed) and why you never seem to worry about collecting food or air.
