Analysis / Trans Character, Cis Actor

Go To

Systemic transphobia plays a big part in this casting choice. Because trans creators (both on screen and behind the scenes) receive less opportunities due to being deemed "higher risk", trans characters often unfortunately have to settle to being casted by cisgender actors. As for why cisgender actors still taking these roles, well Money, Dear Boy is a big factor, as well as the accolades that the actors would sure to receive from an equally ignorant and transphobic award body. Some of them even consider that transgender people themselves are just performances. This viewpoint has NOT been received well at all by the transgender and nonbinary communities, who stated that the end of the day, they will have to live with the stigma and discrimination that came with being trans while the straight actor can just take off the trans "costume" that they put on for the role and go back to their privileged cisgender life.
