Fail Shep heads to Omega to recruit the turian vigilante Archangel. Omega is a former mining space station that has long since become a Hive Of Scum And Villainy. Any vigilante who can operate there without getting killed is a worthy addition to the team.
Fail Shep is greeted by some thugs sent by Aria T'loak, the local crime lord. Fortunately, Aria decides not to get in Fail Shep's way and even gives him Archangel's whereabouts. Unfortunately, the three largest mercenary gangs in the galaxy, the Blue Suns, the Eclipse and the Blood Pack have joined forces to kill him.
Fail Shep joins the mercenaries so he can reach Archangel. A young man named Jonn Whitson also signs up. Although Fail Shep can tell that Whitson has no combat skills whatsoever, he doesn't stop him from joining up.
While in the mercenaries' base, Fail Shep passes up opportunities to sabotage their YMIR Mech and gunship. Whitson gets shot in the head the moment the assault begins. Fail Shep and co. betray the mercenaries and reach Archangel, who is revealed to be Garrus Vakarian, the turian C-SEC officer Fail Shep declined to recruit in the previous game.
I was disappointed to learn that there is very little difference in Garrus' dialog if you didn't recruit him in ME1. Aside from the first two or so lines of dialog, the scene plays out just like normal. Garrus even does his "Just like old times" Catchphrase. I have heard that Garrus cannot be romanced if you didn't recruit him in ME1, but since Fail Shep is male and Garrus isn't interested in men, that won't come up.
Fail Shep and Garrus fight the mercenaries, killing Jaroth and Garm, the leaders of the Eclipse and Blood Pack respectively, in the process.
The Blue Suns attack is more deadly. Although Fail Shep manages to kill their leader, Tarak, and his Dragon Jentha, Garrus gets a rcoket to the face.
Fail Shep gets Garrus back to the Normandy. Garrus pulls through, although he has gained some nasty scars.
