Fail Shep and co. head down to Virmire to help a salarian infiltration team destroy a cure for the genophage. Fail Shep has no clue what the genophage is and, if I have my way, never will, but it gets Wrex really really mad. Fortunately, Wrex is grateful that Fail Shep recovered his family armor and agrees to go along with the mission.

In order to destroy the genophage cure, Fail Shep and the salarians attack Saren's base separately. Fail Shep has Ashley go with the salarians to help coordinate the two teams' actions. Unfortunately, Fail Shep is negligent with diverting fire from the salarians and Captain Kirrahe, the leader of the salarian team, is killed.

Inside the base, Fail Shep finds two salarian prisoners. One, Ganto Imness, is acting as normal as possible for someone who has been held prisoner. The other, Menos Avot, is babbling like a loon. Fail Shep frees Avot and leaves Imness to die when Fail Shep blows up the base. Avot proceed to turn on Fail Shep and is gunned down.

Fail Shep encounters and kills krogan scientist, Dr. Droyas. He finds an asari scientist, Rana Thanoptis, but he lets her go. Fail Shep finds another Prothean beacon like the one on Eden Prime. After viewing it, he is contacted by Sovereign. It turns out that Sovereign is really a Reaper. The Reapers are a species that wipes out all technologically advanced life every 50,000 years. Sovereign is mind controlling Saren in order to bring the rest of the Reapers back.

Wait, Wrex lives? Is he needed alive for Shepard to fail something later more spectacularly?

Rana lives? I haven't played ME 3 yet; is there some reason why she's still among the living and breathing?

Sparing Rana has a very minor drawback in ME3. It doesn't effect gameplay or story, but it still is somewhat less optimal result than killing her.

Since you don’t have garrus or liara at this point, you shouldn’t need the family armor to make Wrex stand down. Wrex will stand down if his dying would leave you with only tali for the last part of Virmire.
