So the game begins with three people discussing FailShep's qualifications for a certain position. One of them (Udina) doubts that someone who has been through so much trauma is qualified to protect the galaxy. Another (Anderson) says that that is the only kind of person who can protect the galaxy. I laugh at Anderson's naivete.

FailShep serves as the executive officer on the SSV Normandy, which is one a routine mission to the colony of Eden Prime. It is quickly revealed that this isn't actually a routine mission. The Alliance has discovered a beacon on Eden Prime that was left behind by the Protheans and the Normandy is being sent to pick it up. This mission is also a test to see if FailShep is qualified to join the almighty Spectres and a turian Spectre, Nihlus Kryik, is going to tag along to evaluate him.

The mission doesn't go as planned. Robots called the geth have attacked the colony. Corporal Jenkins gets shot before you even get to fight in gameplay. FailShep doesn't even bother to check to see if Jenkins is dead or just badly wounded. FailShep and his other surviving squadmate, Kaidan Alenko, save Ashley Williams, one of the few marines to survive the geth attack. FailShep doesn't want Ashley to come along, but Kaidan forces him to acquiesce to the demands of the plot.

Nihlus gets killed by Saren, another turian Spectre who serves as this game's villain, but Team FailShep manages to reach the beacon, which beams random images into FailShep's mind before it self-destructs.

Death List (I think I stole this from Mom Effect, but I think it's important to keep track of just how many people FailShep's decisions get killed. Characters whose deaths are unavoidable are labeled (plot)):

  • Richard Leeroy Jenkins (plot)
  • Nihlus Kryik (plot)

This liveblog is off to a slow start, but that's mostly because few of the really stupid decisions take place in the first game.
