Go To

At the end of the last entry, I obtained a boat, a fourth party member and got within sight of the Wind Shrine. I'm now going to explore the rest of the area on the boat before proceding to the Wind Shrine.

While I'm on the boat, I don't seem to be attacked by anything, so it's a relatively safe mode of transportation. A bit south of the Wind Shrine, I come to an area where there looks to be a river between two peninsulas. Approaching it, I leave the world map and enter a new area. There is a gate in the water here. As I approach it and press A I'm informed that "The canal gate is locked."

Going further south I come across an ismuths which I can land on, but can't cross in the boat. A bit west of that is the area from the start of the game. It has Goblins and Killer Bees as enemies now that I don't have Boko. Speaking of which, the cave is just north of here, so let's check on Boko and the pirate area.

Bartz: Wha... those look like
Boko's footprints! Don't tell me
he tried to go after us...

I get to the pirate area and see the Pirates walking around awake this time. I don't need to hide since I have their Cap'n with me.

Pirate: We put that kwehin' bird to bed,
an' be attendin' to its wounds.

(Different) Pirate: We found some strange bird lyin'
in the cave. Wonder how it'd taste?

Exploring there is a room with a hidden door disguised (poorly) to look like a wall. Since we saw a skull switch before, let's try it out. It opens the door, revealing three treasure chests, an ether, a tent, and 300 Gil.

There's a pirate standing on the dock for the boat, preventing you from going offscreen.

Pirate: Never ye fear. We'll protect the
hideout!

The final room has a bunch of beds, including one containing Boko! He's being attended to buy an old man.

Bartz: Boko!
Boko: Kweh...
Lenna: Oh! He's been hurt!
(Old Man without a portrait or name): Found him zonked out in the cave, so we
brought him back here. But he'll be fine,
now that he's in my capable hands.
Bartz: Please,
if you can help him, doc...
(Doc): Leave everything to me!

To the right of this area are three pirates by a table, some crates, and some pots. All of which are empty.

(One) Pirate: Arr! We be pirates, an' do as we
please!

(Another) Pirate: Those quakes must've opened up
a path to our cove from th' outside.

(Third) Pirate;: We'll hold down the fort while
the captain's away!

There's a door here which leads back to a view of the main area. In order to go back to the ship, I'll need to go all the way out the way I came in. ut, at least I have peace of mind about Boko.

Sailing around, I can go to were the cove is, but cannot actually enter the hideout that way.

Sailing west and then north again, following the land, I come across the first town in this game. The dialogue earlier makes me think this is Tule.

Enering the Town I find out that it is indeed Tule.

Pirates: Grog! Grog!

Five pirates rush in

Faris: Think I'll stop in and have a
drink as well.

I will explore the town more in the next installment.

Mostly in the world I've encountered Goblins and Killer Bees, even on that isthmus. But, on one of the peninsulas by the canal, I encountered a Bandersnatch, which was a challenge at this level - OHKOing Galuf. By the wind shrine are Stray Cats. The area around Tule has Nutkin, Goblins, and Stray Cats.

Whoa, getting late. OK, very short one this time. Mostly it's just some of the charming side things that make this game endearing. And treasure.

Interesting; when I played Final Fantasy V (on the PS 1 Anthology collection), I never went back to check on Boko. I feel like a bit of a jerk now, but it's good to know that he was taken care of all that time.

It's good to hear that you're doing well so far, and I wish you the best of luck, especially when it's time to head to the Wind Shrine and the gameplay really expands...
