My Little Chris-Chan: Friendship Is Forever

Now, a bit of a mistake on my behalf. I assumed Sonichu 12-9 wasn’t completed, but it seemed that it was and I was being a numpty about it. The cover reveals that this is a special kind of episode and no, not the ones we read where it explores transsexualism, but as in its gonna be a crossover with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

It’s sobering, since that show had ended last year.

But, hey, tribute to MLP in the form of a side-story. This might be fun. Let’s dig in.

So this issue beings with Chris-Chan explaining how she’s actually an interdimensional traveler and that we can hear her psychic powers. She then reveals that she’s actually an Equestrian? I’m a little confused. Is this a Rick and Morty thing where this is actually an alternative version of Chris-Chan we’re seeing or is this legitimately Chris-Chan and I’ve just been Vash Blade’d.

“I, like many, was born a filly to a blue-printed Pegasus and a country tomboy Earth Mare.”

Yes, I remember how Big Macintosh was born to a Pegasus and a tomboy named Pear Butter.

Joking aside, our protagonist explains her story. She was born in 1982, just like Chris-Chan and remembers the events of the original My Little Pony where-

“Tirek was turning Ponies into Dragons.”

…………………………

How the fuck is G1!Tirek more badass than G4!Tirek. All G4!Tirek is good for is SUCC and here you have someone who goes “yo, gonna turn you all into badass motherfucking dragons, bitches!”

Anyways, she continues to recount the MLP movies, even saying how a crocodile from one of them is Gummy’s grandfather, in true “G1 to G4 conversion” fic fashion.

Okay, context: G1 is the old MLP stuff, G4 is Friendship is Magic. Jury’s out on what G2 is meant to represent, but G3 is basically those direct to video movies released in the 2000’s that no one wants to talk about… Especially G3.5.

She then explains how she has autism and how she hard confirms that she’s a separate entity from Chris-Chan from the original universe by having visions of the other Chris-Chan. They bond rather quickly and-

Okay, I’m gonna say it… That image where she gets the visions… That’s literally from The Cutie Mark Chronicles when Twilight ended up being unable to control her magic.

Through this bonding, she gains a Cutie Mark. I wonder what her special talent is… If I were to hazard a guess, I’d assume it has something to do with a strong bond. Usually, when someone gets their Cutie Mark, it’s to signify a special talent that they had during an event. Like a thundercloud with a rainbow-colored lightning bolt would symbolize the eagerness for competition and not being in charge of weather control MAGICAL MYSTERY FUCKING CURE!

… Sorry. There’s still some old wounds in me that I thought I had let go of…

The way this monologue sounds, with how she’s like “Chris-Chan had to go to counselling sessions and special educations but not me!” sounds more like “man, my childhood sucked so here’s a better version of it!”. The kind you’d see in those “kid finds an extraordinary world outside his ordinary world” books…

Also, isn’t magic kindergarten a form of special education?

One cool thing is that she implies that she hatched the dragon who would grow up to be Princess Ember. There’s a large wall of text but the most I can sum up is that she meets Lyra who she teaches to stand on her hindlegs, her eye turned green after experimenting with slime (did it make her blind?), discovered that Chris-Chan transitioned, met the Autobots, the Sailor Scouts, the Smurfs, Red Skeleton, Lucille Ball, Britney Spears and more people that the author wished to meet.

You know, at least with Percy Jackson, that “your mom stayed with your abusive father because his odor hides you from the enemies” plot point, while also coming off as a bit wish fulfilly, at least became part of a larger plot point down the line. And that awesome Medusa thing at the end.

But, the biggest take away from this is that she went to CWC Ville and drew Pony versions of Sonichu. She’s also learned the ability to not only transform into a human, but also teleport to other locations in the multiverse. Our protagonist is named Night Star and she seems to be a pretty famous person, since Sonichu himself asks to attend a concert in Equestria. And they also are able to chat with CWC. As in we have a live action picture of the author of Sonichu, who tells Jamsta and Lolisa that she’ll get the pages drawn for concert time.

TIME FOR BACKSTORY! Jamsta is this rapper guy and Lolisa is his partner. In fact, Jamsta is actually the Jet Set Radio Sonichu I talked about previously.

It’s pretty slice of lifey up in here. Then she goes to Canterlot High and ends up bumping into her human world counterpart. Now, Equestria Girls played with this in the form of Twilight Sparkle, where we see both the Equestrian-turned-human version and the human version. But there’s a clear difference in design between the two. Pony!Twilight keeps her long, straight hair and her clothes look more like she got them out of a thrift store while Human!Twilight wears her hair in a bun, wears glasses, and is mostly dressed formally.

Here, the two versions of Night Star can be told apart by… the color of their skirt. For future reference, Pony Night Star is purple skirt, Human Night Star is white skirt. Pony!Star plays wingman for Human!Star as she tries to bag herself someone named Diamond Melody. Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie gets herself caught in a Pokeball… Okay, not gonna lie, that’s totally in her character, especially the rolling away part.

Night Star then goes and meets up with Sunset Shimmer who is making a permanent hair dye. Night Star then gives a lore dump on Equestrian calendars, including how there’s different months.

“Heat is the longest month.”

I can imagine.

So, Night Start meets her version of Diamond Melody and they hit it off smoothly. Then there’s a random Nepgear cameo… What? Why? That has got to be the most random cameo I’ve seen… And I’ve seen Hatsune Miku (author of Harry Potter now) interacting with the cast of Sonic Riders in Garry’s Mod.

… Nepgear isn’t a cameo. She’s a character. And she’s here to explain that the Konami Code is used to make humans remain human when they go to Equestria…

Okay, seriously. This is the most out of nowhere crossover I’ve seen… Nepgear… in a Sonichu/My Little Pony crossover. And it isn’t just some “throw her in for the sake of it” moment. They outright talk a bit about how she’s Neptune’s sister and that she’s a CPU Candidate and…

Sorry, it just baffles me. Moving on, the couple rock out, then they continue to hang out where Star teaches Melody the ropes of being a human. They hang out some more but then it turns out that…

Of fucking course, Melody’s a troll. Pre-fucking-dictable. How many is this now? Like… Ten? Take a fucking shot every time one of Chris-Chan’s girlfriends turns out to be a “troll” and have to be Put on a Bus or Killed Off for Real. Like, Nicole is the only character who didn’t turn out to be some sort of troll and was a genuinely Nice Girl. Megan comes at a close second since she didn’t have any sort of “I was trolling you” moment and just dumped her. Everyone else was either trolling Chris-Chan, killed off, or both. Say all you want about James Bond and the Bond Girl trope, but they don’t always end up dead.

Okay, so there’s a little more to the story, but the long story short is that Human!Melody is the troll and Pony!Melody is horrified at this so much that she decided to leave… What?

“Oh no, my alternate universe counterpart is a dick! I should break up with you!”

… WHY!? That just makes it worse! This is like saying that because Sonic saw that his Mirror Universe counterpart, Scourge, was a dick, he decided to break up with Sally Acorn. The only way I can see this be acceptable is if those alternate universe counterparts were inevitabilities. Like, if it comes to pass that all Diamond Melodies die at a certain point a la JoJo\'s Bizarre Adventure or “When a Diamond Melody is born, the gods flip a coin”, then I can understand, but as it shows, she’s explicitly said to never have been a troll like the others. That shouldn’t make her go “oh noes! I should break up with my best friend!”

In fact, this would be a good plot point to make an engaging relationship. Seeing what you could become and taking great steps to avoid it would be a great arc to have for a relationship story.

Moving on, Discord makes a race for Pegasi and CP Us. Ooooookay… So we’re going balls deep into this Neptunia crossover. Oh, and Night Star meets another Disposable Girl. Calling it right f-ing now. Yeah, I’m so bored at this that I’m neglecting to swear.

One thing that’s annoying me is that the pages are cut off, so you won’t be able to read words coming from the edges of the pages.

Night Star then talks with Magi- Wait, if he can see the future, wouldn’t he know of these “troll girlfriends” and their unfortunate demises? ASSHOLES WITH PSYCHIC POWERS!

So, she goes out with Kun then has to go protect the city. From who? Some random person named Rei.

Finn: REEEEEEEY!

No! Not Rey, Rei. And she’s so powerful that it forced her to Mega Evolve, only for it to fail within ten minutes. All of this is told in several walls of text which has me wonder why this is even a comic and not a fanfic. She gets her ass handed to so badly that Magi-Chan had to take her in for recovery and I feel like this is basically “Oh, she failed so she’s not a Mary Sue!”

Night Star recovers from her coma and I just realized that Chris-Chan is interacting with people in the same way Dr. Smith is shown talking to people in the Nostalgia Critic. Anyways, her cutie mark begins to glow, which means the Cutie Map is calling her. Cool, they remember that part of My Little Pony. And it seems to call her to Kludgetown, a place that’s seen in Friendship Is Magic’s movie.

They then meet up with a character from the film, Celano, who explains her situation to Star and Kun. Long story short, two of her crew members had a falling out over whether or not the Storm King was a cool guy. Then Tempest Shadow appears, who insists on being called that instead of her actual name of (I’m not making this up) Fizzlepop Berrytwist. You’d think that Tempest got over her edgelord phase but nope.

Taking a small break to think this over… Why the hell is this even an issue to begin with? Don’t the pirates already know how much of a douchebag Storm King was? Anyways, they look for clues on Storm King’s island and Tempest finds her broken horn, even wondering how he managed to obtain it. This triggers a trap that the trio have to get out of. There, they find out that one of the Storm King’s men found the horn and the Storm King later kept it to ensure Tempest’s loyalty.

They get the Storm King’s Journal (which surprisingly is canon in the comics) and this convinces the blind crewmate that Storm King was indeed a dick. We end the story with Chris-Chan hopping portals and closing out this MLP Tribute comic.

This was all over the place, but it managed to balance itself out by the end. While it’s not outright split into chapters, there’s clearly breaks in the story as Night Star brings up several things. Only the last chapter fully showed something that could pass for a fleshed-out episode of MLP, a sort of denouement episode to the movie.

Easily, the worst chapter has to be the “my love interest ditched me because her AU version was meeeaaaan!”, since there’s no real means of sense there. The comic does feel disjointed, but for the most part, it was harmless and became a fan’s farewell to Friendship Is Magic.

And I think that’s it for Sonichu for now. Chris-Chan has completed several other books, but most of them didn’t have that same sort of legibility that this comic had. If I were to assume, it might have been that someone took the comic pages and digitized the texts to make it much more legible. You know, these last three Sonichu comics have been pretty alright and serve as a nice farewell to the comic that I loved and hated. One day, I may return to read another issue, but for now, I think it’s good where it is…

Adios, Amigos.
