Chapter 54: Into the Stone

Mat is ambushed by a bunch of Aiel, including Rhuarc and Gaul, but they’re interrupted by Sandar, who is trying to rescue the girls himself now that the mind control is gone. Everyone manages to realize there’s no reason for them not to all just do their own thing, and the Aiel go on their own while Sandar tells Mat he could pose as a prisoner being taken to the dungeon. Good plan…except Mat screws it all up by first using his fireworks as a distraction, and then jumping into the hole they make just as soldiers start swarming in, just like he wanted. I have no clue what his brain did there. Luckily, Sandar saves his dumb ass.

After checking in with Rand, who’s also breaking in, Egwene wakes up and finds that she still has the ring, and decides to go into the dream world with no plan, pretty much just so she’ll be doing something. But it works out, as it’s much easier to use the Power here and she gets a Crowning Moment Of Awesome beating the crap out of one of the Blacks with air hits, also figuring out how she can make air binding self-sustaining.

Perrin finds Zarine, but she disappears and he sets off after her again. And finally it’s back to Mat, who does pretty well for himself beating one of the High Lords, but it’s still hard to forget why he has to be fighting in the first place.

There’s a lot of jumping around here, but it all flows perfectly as we get another climax with all the heroes drawn to one place, but in a different way than book two. Here the fight happens on a bunch of different fronts, allowing everyone to play their own unique role without stepping on each other’s time to be a hero. This may all wrap up in the remaining two chapters after all at this rate.
