Underground Waterway

Well, before we start anywhere, let's look at our new party member:

Porom

Class: White Mage

Porom is the only character, of 6 in this Tale that actually has any importance. And, well, she like Palom, but with White Magic. Can't do much else, but is really damn good at it. While she can't do anything special right now, once we start leaving flashback territory, she'll get Pray, one of Rosa's old abilities from FFIV, restoring some HP to all party members. If it works.

Anyway, let's go to Kaipo.

Palom: Wow! It's Kaipo! We're here!

Porom: What should we do first?

Palom: Let's take it easy for now.

Porom: But you've just spent days resting on that ship!

Palom: Oh, quit complaining. What's the big deal?

We can buy some new weapons here, but with only 300 Gil to start with, we can only buy one set of bows and arrows. We do just that and stick it on Porom, as Palom's starting weapon has a decent use ability. Nothing else to do here, except examine two gravestones on the edge of town.

Tellah, the great sage, rests in this desert oasis together with his beloved daughter Anna.

Palom: The old man's grave!

Porom: Well, don't just stand there! Offer your respects to him!

Palom: ...

Porom: ... (Tellah... may you be happy together with Anna for all eternity. And may you guide us with your infinite wisdom. Especially Palom... He really needs it.)

Porom: (Hey, old man! Guess it's been a while, hasn't it? Well, I'm finally here. I came to visit your homeland and everything. I hope you're watching over me, Tellah... Because someday I'm gonna be a sage, just like you!)

Porom: Palom, is this why you wanted to come to Kaipo?

Palom: Heh heh! Just thought I'd check up on the old man first, you know.

We check Anna's grave now.

Anna, daughter of the great and gentle sage, rests in this desert oasis surrounded by eternal love.

Porom: I didn't realize Anna was here as well.

Palom: ...

Porom: ...

Palom: (Anna, the woman Edward loved with all his heart. She must've been a nice lady. Maybe kind of like our mom.)

Porom: (Anna... I witnessed in person the grace and profound love you possessed within. May you rest in peace alongside Tellah for all time. Sometimes I wonder... if I, too, have a chance... A chance to become a woman like you, a woman who knew how to love more deeply than anyone else.)

Palom looks away.

Porom: What?

Palom: Nothing. Right! On to training, then! To the Underground Waterway!

We head to the Waterway Entrance South. We start off by finding a Crossbow and Lightning Arrows. Not bad. We cross the second bridge.

Palom: (This must be the place. The bridge where Tellah and Cecil first met.)

Porom: What's wrong?

Palom: Nah. It just struck me... I'm really walking down this path, aren't I? I'm gonna be a sage if I keep this up.

Porom: ...Stop thinking about superfluous things in the middle of training.

Palom learns Pig as we make our way to a Wizard's Hat. We then proceed to B2.

Porom learns Protect early on this floor. We reach the Save Point room, and continue along the path to find some Gaia Gear. After that is the door to B3. We find a Thunder Rod here, which we give to Palom. We follow the path to the second section of B2, then onwards to Entrance North.

Porom learns Silence as we head to the exit.

Porom: Hmm? We're at the exit already?

Palom: Not just yet.

Porom: What?

Palom: Can't you feel it? The presence of a monster nearby. A big one.

Porom: Oh. Yes, now that you mention it.

Palom: Things are about to get serious.

Porom: We had better get some rest once we're back above ground.

Palom: You've got that right.

We head out. As using a Tent will change the moon phase to Attack up, we use magic and ethers to heal up. We then head back in to the Underground Falls.

Porom: W-wait! Wait a minute, Palom! That's too dangerous!

Palom: That monster's at the bottom of this waterfall!

Porom: Isn't there any other path?

Palom: Doesn't look like it. You scared?

Porom: N-no! Of course not!

Palom: So, let's go!

We jump down to Underground Lake B2. Not much here, but B1 has a Silver Armlet. It also has a very familiar looking tentacle.

Palom: Here goes! My first test on the path to sagehood!

More tentacles.

Porom: Don't let your guard down!

Palom: I know, I know!

We start a fight against the Cooler Mammoth... wait, that's not the Octomammoth! The Cooler Mammoth has 10 tentacles, and each set of two is one target. So that's the Mammoth itself and four Cooler Leeches. First order of business is to Slow everything, then kill the top left Leech. it likes to spam Blizzara. Not good. We then kill two more with Thundara, but leave one alive. This is because if all four die, they get regenerated. The Mammoth itself is weak to Fire. With the enemies slowed, they prove no threat.

Palom: Hah! So much for sage trial number one.

Porom hits him.

Palom: Ouch! What was that for!?

Porom: You had your eyes on that monster from the start, didn't you?

Palom: ...

Porom: You knew Tellah had problems with it, and you wanted to test your mettle on it for yourself.

What are you talking about? Problems? The Octomammoth required no strategy, compared to this fight.

Palom: Yeah, something like that.

Porom: ...

Palom: What now?

Porom: Is this really the kind of thinking a sage would have, Palom?

Palom: Of course!

Porom: Maybe you should think a little more about how to use your magic.

Palom: ...

Porom: Well?

Palom: ...Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Well, that's done, looks like we're skipping ahead a few years. See you next time.

Porom met Anna? I wonder when that happened...

I wouldn't state that Tellah didn't have problems with the Octomammoth right away like that. Remember that when he joins Cecil, he builds it up as something he can't (or is unwilling) to fight alone. On the other hand, you're right that the Cooler Mammoth is much more complicated to fight.

Fair point, although I don't think he ever points out it would be impossible to do by himself, just that Cecil and Rydia would be helpful in the battle.
