Chapter 18: A Delayed Sea Voyage (Pirate Ship)

Chapter 18:

The next day, the boat was ready to set sail. Feeling rested after having the chance to sleep in an inn for once, we all boarded the ship and set sail. While we were riding out, I overheard Lyn and Hector talking about their parents. I knew a little bit about what happened to Lyn, but I didn't know the whole story. Knowing the tale, it makes her hatred of bandit types more understandable. I also learned of Hector's parents dying of illness. I felt a bit bad about listening in, but I sometimes I can't help but listen to the stories of the people in our group, even if I wasn't supposed to hear. It helps me to get everyone to function better together. The moment was lost, when a boat came adrift nearby our ship. Inside was Ninian, the strange dancer girl from my last journey. She seemed to have trouble remembering her own name, let alone why she was on this boat alone, or where her brother Nils was. Before we were able to learn more, our boat was surrounded and hit by a couple of pirate ships. We're going to try and keep them off of the ship, while the crewmen handle the breach.

We got a chance to do some last minute shopping, after which I sent Lucius and Hector to the Port side of the ship, where Shaman's were beginning to come. Kent's job was to defend the Starboard side from the more physical fighters.

It would soon become apparent that things would not go as I planned. Instead of attack our fighters, a Pegasus knight that Lucius struck with magic instead decided to fly towards Merlinus and heal along the way. Kent managed to really beat the odds, striking a Lancereaver equipped Mercenary with a critical (the hit had a 39% chance of success, and the critical had a 5% chance of occurring).

In a risky bit of thinking ahead and weighing risks, I decided to place the frail, but magic resistant and somewhat speedy Serra in front of Lucius to act as a shield from the Shamans. Meanwhile, that pesky Pegasus knight continued to stay out of harms way. Eventually, it healed up to full, and took the alluring bait of hurting a defenseless Merchant. Hector wisely chose that moment to strike that feisty girl down.

Serra acting as a human shield eventually caught up with her, and she was forced to hold back a bit after getting hit with a strange spell. Canas later told me that the castor could sap a man's strength and use it to refresh them. Dark magic is very powerful indeed.

We managed to finish taking out most of the foe, when a THIRD ship decided to ram into our Stern, attempting to surprise us. Kent had finished up taking on the starboard enemies, so he went to help out at the stern. Matthew was able to steal some Speedwings off of the head foe, Zoldam, and Hector then commenced to doing what he does best, taking him out in one round.

At that moment, Fargus and his men emerged from below decks, and took the liberty of taking out the rest of the pirates for us.

With the matter settled, we turned our attention to Ninian. Lyn remembered the men that had been pursuing her and Nils, and realized that they were probably the Black Fang. We decided that she should probably stay with us so that no one would try to hurt her again. We finally arrived on the island later the next day. Fargus has given us two weeks to settle our affairs, while they try to finish fixing up the ship. One of his crew, a pirate named Dart, has also decided to join up with us. He seems more than willing to fight, and he's apparently a great swimmer as well. I pray that Hector and he get along well, as we'll need everyone's strength to make it through this.
