Part 21 - Catch the uncatchable.

Hmm. What to do first, now?

Well, let's start with that egg I got last time. Hatching it gets us a CElis (Dark/Flying). She's actually another legendary even though the only way to get her is through that egg that usually contains a Togepi. Evolving her through happiness gets us Elis (Dark/Flying).

Elis is an interesting case. Base 150 defense and base 150 special attack rather quickly identifies her strong points. She hits like a goddamn tank - a tank that shoots lasers, anyway - and can take a hit just as well. Hp is base 80, and base 80 attack is enough to make use of her STAB Aeroblast at least. Special defense is 70 and speed is 70. She's one VERY specialized legendary. Ability is pressure.

Next, let's hatch some touhous. First up, Yugenmagan. For an eldritch abomination, it has a surprisingly cute chibi form.

And speaking of cute, Shingyoku's chibi form is... not this.

I've tried every combination I can think of for this, but even though everything I have here says it should produce a CShingyoku I keep getting ShingyokuP. On another note, I had to change Shingyoku to a different form to breed in the first place. Apparently the Orb form can't breed at all. A Moon Stone can be used to cycle through its forms.

On to something that won't fail miserably now, the dark touhous and their tohodex entries.

First we have DRumia, whose taste for human flesh is making her dangerous to have around at this point. She's basically the Rumia of Darker and Edgier Touhou fandom now. This is finalized in her EX form where she's become the typical EX Rumia from fandom, boasting one of the highest attack scores in the game on top of an ability that keeps her "prey" from fleeing. Of course, for those same reasons, Rumia's dark form feels fairly tame. Especially considered to the others.

Let's take a look at DChen, for example. At this point in her evolution, she's violently determined to be reunited with her family. In her EX form, she's given up hope.

Remilia is another one who's giving into her hunger now, suffering from a dangerous level of bloodlust. Yet, her EX form sounds pretty tame since it completely reverses that. She's basically stopped feeding on people herself and just sits around letting others hunt for her. She goes from being on the verge of frenzy to just being lazy. For what it's worth, though, I like her Dark EX portrait better than her regular EX form.

Though now we come upon one that's potentially heart wrenching. Apparently dark Suika is a violent alcholic. That's pretty bad in and of itself. However, it seems Touhoumon aren't immune to disease. In her EX form, she's been diagnosed with the Big C. Cancer. Liver cancer, specifically. She's dying, but she's intent on taking as many people down with her as she can.

Then there's Momiji, who's lost the ability to trust people due to the beatings she received in her chibi form. She lusts for power now, and will cut down anyone in her path to get it. Best described as a lone wolf now.

The abuse Wriggle has taken, on the other hand, drives her down a different path. One of self-destruction. In her EX Form, she's completely suicidal and is dangerous to herself and others. One can imagine her taking her battles beyond merely the point of fainting.

Finally, Patchy. Her dark nature is basically turning her into an insane mage. In fact, in her EX form, she's driven completely to madness. She's like a mad scientist, as her chibi form's tohodex entry hinted, only with magic instead of science.

As depressing as all this is, there IS hope. Just let me breed that DERumia and...

Oh. Nevermind. You can't breed these things apparently. Which means DCPatchy and DCSuika can only be obtained once each. I checked this with Patchouli and, wouldn't you know it? My very first encounter in Five Island Meadow on the way there is a DCMomiji.

Now, as I was saying, there is one way to save dark touhous. Max their happiness (which starts at a flat zero I might add) and they immediately evolve into their next, non-dark form. For example, that DCMomiji immediately evolves into Momiji at max happiness. Though I haven't tested this yet, there's also the distinct possibility that a Dark Chibi that evolves into a non-dark touhou can breed new dark chibis.

Back to evolving random touhous, I decided to get a chibi Alice and evolve her into her alternate form, Margatroid. Her Dark/Psychic PC-98 counterpart. Very high special attack at base 120, attack is decent enough at base 90 but still no real use for it, speed is base 80, hp is base 35, defenses are both base 50. So she's powerful, not especially fast, and frail. Not the best combination. Definitely useable, but she could use a bit more speed. On the other hand, she could probably outspeed base 80's and base 85's anyway from a competitive standpoint since most of those probably wouldn't bother increasing speed. Ability can be either Synchronize or Pressure.

Finally, let's catch some touhous in the wild that we normally can't find at all. Thus the title of this installment.

First, CShingyoku since breeding it went nowhere. Interesting tohodex entry, though. I wonder if that means that the random ERan showing up in the Tanoby Ruins is supposed to be CShingyoku, then? Would make more sense anyway.

On to things that are actually new now, we have CALetty (Ice/Steel). Base 85 speed and special defense, 95 hp and attack, 100 defense, 80 special attack. Fairly sturdy, but overall pretty balanced all around. Focused more on attack than special attack, which is the opposite of normal Letty. Lacking a tohodex entry.

Then the other missing advent, CAMystia (Normal/Flying). 90 speed, 110 special defense, 85 hp, and 75 attack, defense, and special attack. Primarily defensive touhou, basically. Makes a decent support touhou. Or HM Slave, seeing as she learns Fly, Surf, Cut, Flash, and Waterfall. Both Advent Mystia and Advent Letty have ADVENT for an ability.

Having recently (sort of) watched Advent Children, I'm STILL baffled as to who Letty, Mystia, or Mokou are supposed to be.

On that note... which touhou character ended up being Barrett in Advent Cirno? Well, whoever it was couldn't possibly hope to match him. I don't like FF 7 much, but there's still something badass about a man with a gun grafted to his arm. And you know no one would ever dare remove a touhou girl's arm and graft a gun onto it unless they're writing something dark.

Anyway, moving on. Next up, the forgotten PC-98 characters.

Rika (Fire/Steel) is a tank. Plain and simple. Base 110 defense. Base 110 special attack. Base 80 hp and attack. Base 80 special defense and speed. Her only major weakpoint is her rather decimating weakness to ground-type attacks... except she gets Levitate for an ability in her EX form. Also, she has one heck of a level-up movepool. Aurora Beam, Psybeam, Bubblebeam, Signal Beam, Ice Beam, Flamethrower... she's basically the Octillery of Touhoumon.

Luize (Normal) is interesting. While her normal form is pretty bland - fairly balanced stats with a slight focus on offense - she actually has an alternate evolution. By giving her second form a Moon Stone, she evolves into FLuize, a Ghost/Normal type. FLuize is much more offensive and, in turn, frail. Luize has base 90 hp, 100 attack, 80 defense, 100 special attack, 90 defense, 80 speed. FLuize has base 30 hp, 120 attack, 80 defense, 120 special attack, 80 special defense, and 110 speed. Abilities are Immunity in EX form and Pressure or Shadow Tag in "F" form. Whatever "F" is supposed to be in this game. I figure FLuize will be more important somehow in Touhoumon Green.

Next we have Yuki (Fire), who remains virtually unchanged from any other Touhoumon game she's ever been in. Paper-thin base 30 physical defense, but base 100 speed, special defense, 120 special attack, 90 attack, and 80 hp. Blaze for an ability and a crippling overspecialization in fire-type attacks. Though she does get Outrage at least. I think Yuki's pretty cool regardless.

Then there's Elly (Fighting). Base 100 hp, 140 attack, 65 defense, 50 special attack, 75 special defense, 110 speed. A fast physical attacker who, thanks mostly to her hp, can actually take a special hit. As long as it's not Psychic. 140 attack is nothing to sneeze at either.

And now for the only Windows character missing, Hijiri (Normal/Psychic). I think she should be a fighting-type myself but whatever. This game at least seems to acknowledge that Hijiri isn't a special attacker. Base 90 hp, 80 attack and special attack, 100 defense and special defense, 90 speed. She learns a bunch of buff techniques as well like Bulk Up and Calm Mind. Why? Because the character herself, despite being a mage, focuses primarily on magic that increases her physical attributes. Ironically that means she focuses on magic that rather specifically can't be demonstrated in a danmaku duel. Ability is Serene Grace.

That's it for the more normal characters. Now we get on to some... weird ones.

Starting with Gatensoku (Steel). This one baffled me and the lack of a tohodex entry certainly didn't help. Just what the hell was Gatensoku supposed to be, why was it listed as a Mecha, and why does she seem to bear a resemblance to Keine?

Turns out that resemblance to Keine... was a coincidence. She's actually a fan creation. Another one of those "Hey! Let's make a boss for the upcoming game even though it already has a boss and definitely won't resemble whatever I make!" type of fan creations that just baffle me. This one at least shows some actual thought, though. She's basically a touhouized version of the first robot ever built in Japan, the Gakutensoku. That's actually clever enough for me to not hate this too much, though I still wonder why someone felt the need to make her...

As a touhoumon character, she's a wall. Base 150 hp, 150 defense, and 90 special defense. She can take a lot of punishment. She only has base 80 attack to try to dish any back with, though, and base 50 special attack is pretty much useless. Speed is base 30. Ability is Battle Armor, which is always nice on a defensive character.

Next up, the UFO's, starting with the Red UFO (Fire/Steel). Ability is Levitate which immediately removes a rather glaring weakpoint. The UFO's all tend to have really high, but very specialized stats. The Red UFO has 250 base hp and 100 base speed making it a... fast tank. Defenses are both base 60, so they need some effort values. Which is fine with that much hp. Special attack flat out sucks at base 50. The only move you might consider using it for is Overheat. Attack is base 80, enough to potentially make it's only steel-type attack, Aerial Ace, useable. All in all, it'd rather focus on being a wall/support. Personally, I'd just use Orange.

Blue UFO (Water/Steel)... can you see a pattern here? Yeah, all the UFO's are very much Color-Coded for Your Convenience. The tohodex kinda references this as well, really. The Blue UFO is another one with high speed and high hp. 120 base hp and 150 base speed. Special attack and special defense are base 90, attack is 80, defense is 70. The Blue UFO makes a much better attacker and is still pretty tanky. Kinda like a bulkier, slightly slower, Speed Form Deoxys. Ability is Levitate.

You can probably guess the typing for the next UFO. Green UFO (Grass/Steel). This one is a slow special attacker with good physical defense, but easily shut down by just about anything with Flamethrower. HP is base 85, Attack 75, Defense 115, Special Attack a whopping 185, Special Defense 65, Speed 75. Grass-type attacks are, unfortunately, just about the only thing it can use that massive special attack for. So, again, easily shut down by a fire-type. Ability is also Levitate.

And finally, the last Touhou. ZUN (Normal). Even the tohodex doesn't know WTF. All stats are base 100, ability is Synchronize, learns only Sketch but also gets all HM's and TM's. And just to end this off, here's his menu sprite. A bottle. Nice.

That's finally it for obtainable touhous, save for one. But that one will have to wait because, in order to get her, we need to battle our way to the top of Trainer Hill. Next installment will be the last one where, after some more grinding, we finally take that place head on.

Doesn't Utsuho have a gun for an arm?

Foot -> Mouth. Though apparently Utsuho has a normal hand and just wears the gun over it. Also, pretty sure Advent Cirno predates SA.
